Does Baylor still have, like, 24 players on its roster? (How do they do that?!?) Only 16 listed for the fall. Got it. They've slimmed down since visiting Madison last autumn. That was a big traveling contingent!

Finally was able to sit and watch the spring match against Texas. What a cool environment for volleyball in spring.
The main lineup in the match: OH- Riley Simpson (R-Fr) OH- Cassie Davis (Jr) DS- Alexis Dacosta (Fr) MB- Kara McGhee (Sr) MB- Allie Andrew (R-Fr) OPP- Allie Sczech (Fr) DS- Sophia Keene (Fr) S- Averi Carlson (Fr) L- Lauren Briseno (So)
This Baylor team is YOUNG, but physically gifted and skillfully talented. All 4 freshmen were in the main lineup. Will take some time for it all to come together, but they will definitely give some good battles this year. Lauren Harrison was not dressed out to play but she will be the leader, along with Kara McGhee, come fall. McGhee’s offense looked really good with Carlson setting her. I’ve always been one to defend Sedwick’s contributions to the team, but Carlson will bring so much more to this squad. Will miss the attacking and blocking from Sedwick, but Averi is just so talented.
Passing and defense were a highlight throughout the match. Briseno is solid, as she was all last season. Dacosta and Keene were also great in the passing rotations. Keene saw some time in the front row as well as Elise McGhee, who has such a heavy arm and may challenge for a spot at one of the pins. Dacosta did not play any in the front row.
It’ll be interesting to see how the lineup shakes out in the fall as there is a lot of talented depth at the pins. I wouldn’t count out a 6-2 which Baylor ran some with Molly Kipp. This team will obviously not be as dominant as these last few seasons led by Pressley, but there is a solid foundation to build on.

I do not expect a 6-2 unless Carlson becomes a blocking liability, but even then we may just see Kipp and the other RS sub in for a rotation. Kipp did not look bad and Baylor has the depth at the pins for it, but I agree that Carlson needs to be on the court as much as possible. It is interesting though because Baylor has Harley Kreck coming in next year who is another very talented setter.

Obviously High School level of play is far from that of Baylor, but Carlson practically carried her Lovejoy High School team to a state championship in UIL 5A. If I had to pick a state that is difficult to win state in, Texas would be in the top of my consideration. That being said, she played 6 rotations, and was on the offensive for the front three if I remember correctly. She was assisted by Pepperdine incoming setter Rosemary Archer, and the two of them literally set each other 95% of the time. Neither came off the floor EVER, but Carlson was not shabby on the offensive/blocking side. Like I said before, high school ball doesn’t quite compare to Baylor level, but I was impressed with what she was able to do when she was not focused on setting.

After watching the Texas match this spring, her passing is still as good as ever. She passed over 2.3 in the Fall. Feel like her defence needs a bit of work still, but she will get there. She is so underrated in the conference.

And before Archer was there, Carlson was setting from middle front. Having to block like a middle blocker then turn around to set is so difficult. She really was a stellar high school player, rightfully earning Gatorade POY.

It will be interesting to see what the non-conference schedule looks like with a talented but inexperienced team. Last years non-conf schedule was tuff but they had a talented experienced group. Does Baylor dial that back some to let the younger players build some confidence? Guessing they will be much better in late November than they will be in early September.
