Anyways. Wolverines running the 6-2 with Dowd and Johnson... Seems to me like this might be more than just an opening-weekend experiment. Dowd ran the offense with better efficiency than Johnson, but as has been noted here before, she lacks the size to play against a physical Big Ten. However, the offense ran SO MUCH BETTER with her orchestrating things... Can Michigan afford NOT to play her? I for one don't think so. It should be noted, set two's big run (7-0) came with Johnson running the offense. Jacobs was a difference-maker from the get-go, and quite frankly this set gave me the confidence that the 6-2 is a long-term play. The block was extremely physical -- Pertofsky/Robinson/Mruzik with Dowd + Murray/Boney/Jacobs with Johnson was a very strong combination -- and the defense was steady throughout. Dowd clearly has a better connection with Robinson (they played together in club), but I'm still not convinced Johnson is 100% heathy. She sat out the Utah Tech match as Dowd ran a 5-1. I agree on the efficiency but can we afford the defensive liability when she is in the front row?

I also noticed that the links are now live for this weekend. There is a stream scheduled for each Michigan game, which is a welcome surprise. Now I just hope we have a halfway decent broadcast instead of what has been our normal. This is a great sign for all volleyball fans with teams visiting Ann Arbor. I don't recall the home non-conference matches ever being streamed before. Conference match coverage has been spotty at best, so I'm hopeful we get the full slate streamed this year.

Hey Michigan fans! A match thread is now live for this weekend's tournament in Ann Arbor: Loyola Chicago, Toledo, & Morehead St. at Michigan | Sep 2-3I'm hoping to add lineup predictions for each of the four teams to the first post and would appreciate your best guess at which Wolverines will play, from setter all the way through serving specialist. Thanks and good luck to the maize and blue!

That's why I think, despite years of Rosen teams telling us otherwise, we will see a 6-2 this season. In the non-conference Michigan can get away with Dowd running a 5-1, but that won't work with the physicality of the b1g (not telling anyone anything they don't know here).

If you have a great slide hitter you go with a 5–1. Even with a small setter. If not than go 6-2 imo.

I'm guessing that covid or some other bug is running through the team now. No Scottee Johnson, May Pertofsky or Leisa Rosen in the building plus Mark Rosen was wearing a mask much of the time makes it pretty clear that some sickness is present.

I posted a few weekend-specific thoughts over on the Michigan Invitational thread (in case anyone cares or would like to read), but I wanted to post a few more general thoughts after the weekend.
1) It feels crazy to say in 2022, but THANK GOODNESS we were able to watch a stream of all our matches! 2) I'd gotten into the habit of muting our matches previously, but whoever was broadcasting was actually solid. Forget who they were, but I'll have it on in the future. 3) Michigan has some pieces in place to be a strong team in the B1G. Murray has stepped up big time on the outside. Robinson and Boney are an active and effective part of the offense. Hallgren filled in nicely on the right side with Pertofsky out. Allison Jacobs has come off the bench to play defense in some crucial spots and stood tall to the task. Should be pretty fun to continue to watch. 4) What in the world happens at setter going forward? Is a 6-2 in the future?

He did a great job and it's so nice to FINALLY have a professional stream.

Forgot this in my initial post: 5) Serena Nyambio has been quite the offensive spark off the bench. She brings a dynamic high-end that will be fun to watch grow.

This piece makes it sound as if Maddie Dowd is in the starting lineup to stay. Is she replacing Scottee Johnson or will we see a 6-2?

By my VERY unofficial count during the NAU match (only video available from when both played) Dowd had 28 assists on 51 attempts (55%) and Johnson had 11 assists on 47 attempts (23%). Will be interesting to see how they roll with Johnson (presumably) back -- judging based on her being present on the sideline Saturday -- against Duke and UNC this weekend.

Your numbers are very close to the box score that shows Dowd with 28 assists and Johnson with 10. I'm still not convinced that Johnson is 100% healthy; this would be a dramatic shift away from the setter who has run the offense almost exclusively over the last two seasons.

Rosen simply doesn’t seem to believe in getting big time competition in the preseason. Every year it seems Michigan starts conference season with this glamorous record only to be a touch above .500 by October 1. The first few weeks of conference play always seem to be an absolute train wreck for Michigan as they get used to to high level of competition in the big ten.
Does he think that he needs all the wins he can get to make sure their record looks half decent to the selection committee? In recent memory, Michigan doesn’t put up much of a fight against top tier big ten teams until the very end of the season. In my opinion, at least one big time opponent would be helpful before the conference season begins.
Maybe I’m wrong or maybe this years team will start off strong in conference play. Time will tell.
