What happened over 2010-2013?? The biggest issue was a miss on quarterback (my point on recruiting misses) and qb injury. Garret Gilbert was the Gatorade National player of the year and heir apparent (be wary of heir apparents) and just did not pan out, the David Ash had to quit due to concussions which left them with trying to win with Case McCoy (not Colt) at qb when he probably should have been at Tarleton St, not Texas. But to his credit he played as well as he could and did beat OU and has the last win against A&M. There seems to be something to do this. I read this article, which was pretty eye opening. Texas missed out on these QBs from Texas, among others: Matthew Stafford Andrew Luck Robert Griffin III Johnny Manziel Nick Foles Ryan Tannehill Ryan Mallet Also, Jameis Winston, who isn't from Texas but said he would have gone there if they had offered him. Yikes.

Stafford was always going to Georgia because of ties to the school and would have been a true freshman when Colt was a redshirt freshman. Texas recruited Jevan Snead in that class who was about as highly rated as Stafford and battled McCoy for the starting job in 2006. Foles, Tannehill, and Mallett were all 07 recruits after Colt had won the starting job in 2007. Mallett was a top recruit, but Foles and Tannehill were not. Tannehill actually began as a WR at A&M. None of the four would have played at Texas until 2010 because of McCoy and good chance they would have transferred before then if they had gone to Texas. Luck is the biggest miss.

Yikes. Ugh lol, I put that in a dark corner of my mind. In a conference driven by QB play it’s tuff to win when your qb has to leave both feet when he’s throwing the ball past 20 yds like he’s throwing a javelin. Had Gilbert panned out or Ash did not have to leave football there is no guarantee but it’s possible Mack could still be there. I’m sure when he offered Colt’s brother he thought this kid won’t ever play, then he’s determining whether you get to keep your job. My brother in law was on that staff and Mack was told he had to win the B12 or they were going to force him out. They were playing Baylor in final game for the B12 championship and lost the game and the rest is history.

The other is that he was going to Texas, but Mack didn't offer him at the first junior day camp (big deal at the time) and that pushed him to Stanford.

Came to the thread for volleyball… wasn’t expecting a discussion on Texas quarterback recruitment lol You thought there was going to be 17 pages of laser focus talk on a new vball program scheduled to start in 2025, and no other details are known?
People are allowed to deviate, when there is nothing new to talk about.
No one is stopping you from starting up the Vanderbilt discussion again. Go ahead

There are multiple reasons but I would say coaching decisions would be the main reason, some of its missed recruiting (which you could go back to coaching). Distractions at programs I imagine could be a factor but I think it’s minimal. Miami,USC (LA) and Texas (Austin) have all gone through spells of being really good and really mediocre over the last 40 years and the distraction thing isn’t brought up when their good and these cities have be plenty of distractions, never been to Lincoln and they have been mediocre with I assume minimal city distractions. I’ve only been to Nashville once and it seems more like Austin than College Station, Oxford Ms, Tuscaloosa in terms of distractions. But I think the main thing that will drive Vanderbilts success is finding a coach that can bring energy to a new program. People criticized Mack because he wasn’t a great X’s and O’s coach but he was a great salesman (recruiting, energizing the fan base) and that’s a big part of the job too that should not be discounted in any sport. What happened over 2010-2013?? There are a lot of theories. Some is just bad luck, but some also think Brown didn't adapt to the changes in both the on-field game and in recruiting. This can happen with really successful coaches as they get older. As an example, BYU is one of the most successful women's cross country programs historically. They had a legendary coach who won four titles and had three runnerup finishes between 1997 and 2003. After that, they started to decline, finishing 19th or worse from 2006-2015. It is believed that the coach wasn't working as hard as he had been before (he was in his mid-50s, the same age Brown was near the end). He eventually retired in 2016, and they hired a new coach who was young and hungry. They finished in the top 10 in her first season, were the national runnerup in year four and won the national championship in year five. Some coaches adapt well as they age (e.g. Saban), but not all of them do.

That's a good point. Busting your a__ to the bone is grueling and you're working towards an ultimate goal. When you achieve it, I suppose it's only human nature to let off the gas.

I've generally found that unless it's a hot, compelling, controversial subject, most discussion threads on any board lose focus after 2-3 pages of posts. Part of someone's post is a subject that is more interesting than the OP at that point and away we go. This one was doomed from the beginning because it's not controversial (at least on this board) and not hot or compelling since it had no details as you stated. Actually did good to last as long as it did on just volleyball talk. The only thing unique about this one is that the other subjects kept it going to page 17 instead of dropping to oblivion on the thread topic list.

Over under on number of NCAA tourney appearances for vandy in the first 10 years of the program. Bar is set at 3.5. I say….
Under.
Initial excitement and transfers get them there but lack of support and turnover lead to their missing the cut.

I will go under because that it is a formidable task for most schools that have an established program, and thus even tougher for a school building a program from scratch. Question for you - in this thread you've expressed the opinion in several posts that implies that you expect the new program to receive a lack of support. If that is accurate, what are the reasons for your opinion?

I just think the combination of Nashville + Vanderbilt education hits an incredible sweet spot in the demographics/culture for a lot of elite volleyball athletes and their parents (and it will only get sweeter as TX/GA/FL continue) that I don't think other high academic schools offer, and it particularly fits volleyball more than it does other sports.
The potential is sky high here. I think Vandy'll support it because I think it has potential to be one of their best sports on campus.
