Still under construction, but with the club season officially finishing yesterday, thought I'd make this thread for NT season
VNL is coming up 2 weeks from tomorrow, should be lots of fun!
I'm too lazy to update the OPs for every single weekly roster but we can just post those on this thread and use this also to discuss matches not involving USA (I'll make match threads for those)

Thanks for the thread! With new roster compositions and players (+ this being a World Championship year), I think this could be a fun edition of the VNL. Here are some storylines I think could be exciting to follow:
1. France and Brazil both bring a mix of vets plus some new faces. Both have some exciting pins to potentially look out for. I expect them to be near the top. Will Patry be rejuvenated for France after his season with Milano?
2. Poland is Poland, but I think they should rest Leon. Semeniuk better be given the respect he deserves. Notable omissions include Drzyzga and Kubiak. Huber (MB) was injured. Italy will contend but between Pinali, Romano, and Stefani (+ Zaytsev is also on the roster) who steps up at opposite? I think they should invest in Stefani but maybe they roll with a 3 OH system?
3. For Serbia I don't believe I see Kovacevic on the roster? Podrascanin and Lisinac are on there. Slovenia can have a deadly 1-2 punch with Cebulj and Mozic, we'll see what Stern is like after an up and down season with Piacenza.
4. Iran will have to test out their young players. Who steps up at setter? Who emerges at the opposite... Yali, Saadat, or Kazemi. I don't see Seyed Mousavi on the roster. Japan I believe will mainly roll with their A-lineup plus a couple new faces... Miyaura is a lefty oppo who can score but isn't proven at the international level. Japan also has a 6'3/6'4 setter who I think may get some extended looks to bring height to that position. China beat Japan recently, so can China gain some decent ground on the international stage or at least beat the lower teams?
5. USA also has a mix of vets and new players. Canada brings a lot of new faces, and Vernon-Evans is not on the roster... I think he's taking a break? Argentina will be without Sole, and also have some younger players on the roster.
6. Players who might carry include Weber and Nimir lol.
Finally, some non-USA NCAA players who made rosters (if I'm missing any lmk): Gallas, Nikolov, Lui.

Japan released their 14-player roster for week 1 and will travel to Padova to train before heading to the VNL. This is essentially their A team with a couple of new players. Interesting omission from the week 1 roster is OH Takanashi who was on the Tokyo Olympic roster. http://instagr.am/p/Cd5E1WMP6PZ OPP: Nishida, Miyaura OH: Ishikawa, Ran Takahashi, Otsuka, Tomita S: Sekita, Eiro MB: Onodera, Yamauchi, Kentaro Takahashi, Murayama L: Yamamoto, Ogawa

Assuming they are invested in winning VNL. Honestly tho Brazil, France, and Poland all have the talent to mix in the new or bench players and still place high. France and Poland I think have more upside bc of their younger players. Brazil’s vets are still great though and you never count out Brazil (why do I feel like Flavio will dominate). I think there’s some questions for each of the teams to answer, plus there’s some solid contenders like Italy or Slovenia who will have something to say. I forgot to mention Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany, and Australia bc I’m not too familiar with a lot of their players and/or I personally didn’t see much things of note. Netherlands and Australia probably near the bottom, Germany and Bulgaria optimistically closer to the middle but could be near the bottom.

I forgot about Italy I think we'll see if teams have learned to defend Michieletto better or if he was just tired after a long season + last summer. hopefully he gets some time off.

live look at me reading these overall rosters and foolishly attempting to transcribe all 25 players from every team I've instead decided to list important names I remember on the thread and am just linking the overall listings...if you think I've missed an impactful player lemme know. I'll probably list all of the American players though, because yk

Italy has tons of depth at OH... Gardini definitely on the outside looking in until he can prove to be a sufficient passer. Interestingly, this could be the swan song for Zaytsev if he can't assert himself with this new generation of Italian players.

Maybe a little bit of juicy drama but I read that Grbic didn't like Heynen's approach to the Polish NT and Grbic stated that he did not want special treatment for anyone (ahem no special treatment for Kubiak). He will have the same approach with all of the players and wants to create a more respectful environment in the National team. Also some swelling in the knee was reported for Leon so I expect him to get rest as he should anyways.
