It's the controversy that nobody is talking about. Pitt has the third best RPI, yet everyone expects them to miss out on a top 4 seed. I stated this expectation myself two weeks ago. Politics, I said. A few people had their feathers ruffled, and said it wasn't so. But, inconveniently the season's end RPI still had Pitt above those others that are supposed to get it. Read the posts. Everyone is sure Pitt is going to get dumped. It isn't even mentioned. They just fuss about Stanford vs USD. Business as usual. RPI isn't the end-all, be-all. RPI is not an automatic seed generator. It's one of but many things looked at. There's a reason the MBB committee trashed it altogether. It's garbage. If Pitt didn't lose to Towson, they very well would have that 4 seed.

I wasn't sure how to order Minnesota-Ohio State-Nebraska-Oregon. I hope Minnesota gets rewarded for this past weekend, and I'm not sure how low Ohio State can go. I too think 1-6 is its own group and 7-9 will be the three Big Ten teams. But Minnesota at 7 puts a little too much stock into the last weekend and not the overall body of work, IMO. 8 total losses, including Pepperdine (at home), Purdue and Northwestern (at home)... Yes, two great wins to end the season for sure, but I just cannot look past Minnesota and Ohio State's bad losses this season. Nebraska's 5 losses are all to teams who will be Top 10 seeds. I would go: 7 Nebraska 8 Minnesota 9 Ohio State I put Ohio State at 9 not very confidently because they are the only team in the Top 25 of the RPI with a +100 loss. That alone could knock them down a couple more seeds. Valid argument. I like your reasoning.

I’m going to have a hard time stomaching Auburn in. Beat 1 program above the RPI cut line (UGA twice), go 0-15 in sets against top 25 teams and lose to the worst team in the conference, Mizzou. Doesn’t scream tournament team to me. Maybe the committee really can reach to Michigan or Northwestern. Those Colorado State losses are pretty ugly. I don't know why'd they stretch to put Tennessee in but leave out Auburn given Auburn has the H2H (and Tennessee lost to Bama) I'd also rather Auburn than Ball State. I vote for that spot to go to Drake. It would give them their first tournament appearance. They have a better RPI than Michigan and Northwestern Prior to losing the MVC tournament championship match in a 5th set, they had won 12 straight matches

If they trashed RPI then teams with good recent form and/or recovering from injuries would benefit. I'd be ok with that

I thought there was a “drive in” rule? First round had to be drivable or within certain mileage. Does NCAA fly the teams if it is more than a few hours?

In the current figstats RPI, South Dakota (#40, 0.5976) and Northern Iowa (#41, 0.5964) are practically neck and neck. UNI had been above USD up until USD won yesterday afternoon (Rich has UNI at #38 and USD at #46 in "Pre-Selection RKPI") But UNI has a t50 win (at Iowa State) while USD does not. Both are midmajor champions, having won both the regular season and conference tournament over contenders in the mid-60 RPI range (64 Drake and 68 Omaha, only separated by .0025 in RPIpct). And UNI has already played Creighton this season.
So perhaps those two could be switched. with South Dakota facing Creighton and UNI facing UCF

I seriously doubt Texas is boat racing their Sweet Sixteen opponent, Creighton or not. I guess it depends on how we're defining boat racing. Also, it would be a fascinating juxtaposition for me with the huge men's basketball game in Austin on Thursday night. Creighton fans could get in a two for one (really a three for one) as long as they're willing to pay the money for the tickets. The basketball game is this Thursday, the theoretical volleyball matchup wouldn't be until 8 - 10 days later. Flight plus a week + more in a hotel/airbnb. If they were closer together, I could see a road trip, and a pass through of my old stomping ground Ft. Hood. Doesn't matter, Creighton will draw someone pissed off about getting a top 16 seed and my Jays will lose in the 2nd round.

Of course, it doesn't always get the result they want, so they supplement it with other criteria, as well. All they need is to have enough criteria to validate the political choice they will make. I firmly believe they desire a B1G team and a western team getting a top 4 seed. The ACC already has one in Louisville. The Towson loss isn't a deal-breaker. It's just an obvious excuse to do what they want to do. Politics.

We play Minnesota every year, and have recent tourney history. Can we get a crack at Ohio St. or something?

There was no Top 4 seed from the Pacific time zone.

Here's a (jank) replay of the Creighton-Marquette match for anyone who hasnt seen them this year... (you can skip set one LOL)
Marquette's serving and fast offense will be a tough ask for whichever 4 seed they get. (if they dont get a seed)
