For a consistent top 25 team they should have been fine with their backup setter, it’s not like decent top players aren’t going to Creighton if recruited there. their backup setter was their starting opposite… who’s never set a D1 match before they didn’t have a backup setter?

their backup setter was their starting opposite… who’s never set a D1 match before they didn’t have a backup setter? their backup setter transferred last spring to high point. So they recruited Jazz Schmidt (who was a D2 setter/opposite). They have a walk on setter… but yea… she’s not an option lol My point more was since they lost Kendra and had to replace her with Jazz… they lost their starting setter and opposite (this is kinda off topic, we can go to the Creighton thread if you want to know more lol)

I don’t think it’s a smart idea to do non conference games in the middle of a conference season. Even if UH is up for it, I doubt UCLA would do it because of the risk of injury in a game that doesn’t count for them. I guess there is really nothing UH can do. Maybe just turn up the pressure on practice and maybe scrimmage with more men(get a UH intramural club team)during that week. Creighton is in the same boat like us. They won the Big East, which may be a little better than the BW but still not P5 level of play. They ended up hosting but lost in the first round at home to another SEC team in Auburn. It's just difficult to schedule in the middle of the conference season. Does UCLA/USC really want to play Hawaii after coming back from the road off the Wisconsin/Minnesota weekend while preparing for Ohio State/Illinois later that week? And Hawaii would have to go up early to get the match in (or stay late for a Monday match up). It's just logistically challenging to pull off which is why you don't see it too often. Add to the fact there are only 32 competition dates and the speculation of a conference tournament, it makes for too many variables for the fans to try to figure out right now.

See but I think even though scrimmaging men more often would get them used to getting blasted, there isn’t the same level of adrenaline that comes with an actual match. I almost want to say, forego the by-week and see who is interested in breaking up the monotony of conference play I think we just need to get better players. We have too much holes in our lineup that even if we played more tougher competition mid conference, we will still run into the same problem….lack of athletes to match up with other athletic teams. One is our second middle position. That spot had been a problem all year long. At times we will do fine with Tiff but not consistent enough to call that position a position of strength. A tandem similar to a Maja Gustin/Veronica Lima or a Amber Kaufman/Brittany Hewitt would help this team tremendously. Our second MB and our right side are our weak links. Ofoegbu would be that player, however, we will then kind of have to sacrifice 2024 and start 2 true freshmen (Way and Sylvester) since we will graduate all 4 of our active MBs. Finding an impact MB and moving Caylen to OPP would be ideal IMHO. Caylen played OPP in club at A5 so that is not a position new to her. Her A5 club won the national title so she can do it.

I think the the plan was for Evans to be the M2 this season, but unfortunately it took longer than expected to recover from her injury.

Yeah…I know…but there is now question of whether she can even regain the form she had at Utah. She lost a year of training and conditioning. Instead of taking a step forward, unfortunately, Kennedi took a step back and only has a few month to make up for lost time. We need to find an impact middle. Waiting for Kennedi to come around is risky. Getting Ofoegbu and moving to a 6-2 is starting to be something I think needs to be done to help us take that next step forward.

We can find an impact underclassmen middle, Ofoegbu is great and we all know she’s great, however she’s probably more bound for USC or Stanford with her academic background.

Speaking of setters...
Wish we had a great one. Amber would be that much better!! Bad decisions and middle sets that are too low much of the time. How many times did our middles have to adjust to a less than "juicy" set? 1 on 1 opportunities? Sets that fool the defense? Hummmm... Opposite is in need of an upgrade along with 2nd MB. 🤙

Per the comments section in Cindy Luis' blog, Anna Kiraly is retiring. That would account for the extra scholarship they have.
