Minnesota has the talents but could not win NCAA championship and big 10. Hired Cook and lost to 2nd round this year. Hiring from Gold medal Square mentality does not mean NCAA champions. I will never understand why Hugh wasn’t on the hiring committee let alone leading it. He may have had influence but should have been way more involved, just looking back at that. I hope Cook can be what we’ve been used to her and that it doesn’t take years as the conference only gets tougher next year.

I wouldn’t expect next season to be much better without some significant roster reconstruction (which I don’t see happening). They are what they are with this current staple of players. Any potential program turnaround is going to be a few years away unless there is significant portal use this winter to reshape this roster. One player who I (and many others) feel deserves a shot to grab a pin spot next year is Julia Hanson. Her athleticism and explosiveness gives her a chance to be a very effective hitter as an upperclassmen.

I get the misgivings about the program after comparatively "bad" season for MN volleyball. But, I really don't see how the Cook hire could be questioned. What would have made it a bad hire at the time of hiring, not after looking at his first-year results?

That Creighton match, for example, could have gone either way. Regular season was not as I expected. I could see a season where we don't drop a match to either Rutgers or Maryland. Voilà , you have a better season already. I do believe this team can get better.

I'm only a casual observer, but it's been relatively silent from him.

He was at senior night where Phoebe and Kylie were honored—two players he never coached. I thought that was kinda cool. Not sure if he was spotted at any other matches.

I know his kids are at athletic ages now so may be focused on them and whatever it is he does for a job.

What does gold medal square mean? It’s a coaching philosophy that applies certain principles to the game, generally applying some scientific insight. For example, Hugh focused on repeatable actions, hence why all the Gophers did that same thing where they looked at their hand when they served and used the same service footwork. They also teach, “the ball knows angles”, which is the part about reaching outside of the body line and creating angles with the platform to pass/dig certain balls.

God, I hated that hand thing.
Whenever they served, they'd look at their hand like "Hey, I know you! Your my hand!"
