The other thing I always find myself thinking is how 'definitive' we all treat the tournament to be, and how capricious or maybe haphazard it really is. And that goes for 2021 as much as any other year. Tennessee had, IIRC, a 22-19 lead on Texas in the 4th set, and served a match point. One more point goes the right/wrong way, and Texas bombs out in the sweet sixteen round. But another match like tonight, and they'll be "the best team in the country!". I mean...such is the nature of sports. Seasons often swing on one single play. The Packers had the Seahawks dead in that infamous 2014 NFC Championship game if Bostick had simply blocked like he was supposed to and allowed Jordy Nelson to go and catch the onside kick to seal the W. The Suns had the ball with under 30s left to try and win game 5 until Jrue Holiday stripped Booker. Fair or not, often seasons and sometimes even careers are judged by how those few points in pivotal moments play out.

The round before that for the Bucks, Westbrook (?) has his toe on the line, and a 3 becomes a 2. I understand all of that. I just think we should keep it in mind as these things play out.

One of the things that always strikes me is how definitive people sound when one team is leading. Basketball is the most hilarious to me because of how little a one point lead matters. But you hear announcers commenting at halftime, and it's all about the adjustments the team down by a minimal score has to make to "get back in it." We find measurements for everything. Sports is easier than most because we keep score. So whoever ends up the winner, regardless of the circumstances, that's who the narrative is wrapped around. History is written by the victors and all that. Before Texas won the national championship last year I used to regularly laugh at people who criticized Elliott for not winning more championships. Now that he has his second one, the low hanging fruit of "he can't win titles" doesn't have the same strength. I hate the mentality of title or bust. If the coach leading the program consistently puts his teams in position to win, that's all you can ask for. And frankly, Wisconsin is still on an upward trajectory. That Nebraska program is serious bidness right now, and they have a lot of advantages in the modern era of collegiate sports. Then you have the 4 major volleyball programs being added to the conference. Like Sheffield says, you can have the 11th place Big 10 team be deserving of a top 25 ranking. But if he keeps putting teams together like this year's, they'll break through again at some point. Guaranteed.

Ugh. I'm exhausted. Came back from the match and flying in a few minutes. Great season. Can we get a passing DS for Christmas? Please?! And perhaps a coach willing to sub before we're down 15-4 in a pivotal set? Thanks much! Muah.
I had chatted with Sheff about 3 hours before the match and my spouse joked, "did you ask him about his subbing more quickly?" Turned out to be prophetic.

What's Kelly gonna do besides bench GG? What else do they have? Nothing. Because they didn't recruit for crap for the class of '22 and '23. I said this since beginning of year. They finally found themselves in a position where they needed quality on the bench to possibly step in, but there wasn't any. 1 recruit this year, who came in injured, and ended up injured. 1 of 2 recruits last year, who's injured, and from what I hear, may never see the court because of the lingering injuries. I saw this year as their best chance to win for the foreseeable future, and they not only didn't win, but got drubbed, which, catch 22, can't improve their recruiting. If they had recruited players according to you, we would not have had the following players on the team: Franklin Booth CC Recruiting in the transfer portal IS recruiting, it's a 0-sum game. There's only 12 total schollies. I'm glad you finally admitted the Wisconsin recruiting intentions, "no freshman" I think Building a cohesive team is important and your core should be your incoming freshman and focus. Winning national titles isn't easy.

But last night was not one such example lol.

Winning national titles isn't easy. The portal is here to stay. The future is using both freshman and the portal to build your team. Look at Clemson and their struggles in maintaining where they have been in football. They are the only top team that refuses to use the portal and most experts believe that it’s costing them. I have no problem using both incoming freshman and the portal to build a team. Bringing in players like Franklin, CC, and Booth that have 3 years of eligibility and have already proven themselves at the college level is extremely valuable. If Charlie is as good as advertised next years team is going to be absolutely loaded and will have a great chance to be right back in the Final Four with a chance to win it all. This was a final four team. I think they are a cohesive unit and fight for each other. We just had a bad night at the wrong time. The team we played and how they played was a big part of us having a bad night and they deserve a ton of credit. Izzy and MJ leave with multiple B1G Titles, multiple trips to the Final Four, and a national championship. That’s quite the legacy.

Hard way for a very talented team to end their season. Did not appear to be WI's best effort of the year, especially the last 2 sets.
Wonder if: 1) There was some intra-team drama impacts; OR 2) Some players suffering from the respiratory crud going around.
Regardless, WI had a good 23 season. Now on to next year, with a 3 day head start on NE and TX.

Unfortunately things came full circle on the Badgers. The supreme talent advantage we typically have had against most this season gone against the All-American Longhorns. What never really went away but masked now displayed in full fashion like a swiss cheese back-row defense and the suspect setting not rescued by Smrek and Franklin abilities. Terrible connection between Izzy and middles and what was with all the tight sets. I left a comment on the OFG against Tennessee thread volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/95355/wisconsin-24-tennessee-sun-b1g?page=16but it will get buried so I will link that as well.

I'm not minimizing those achievements. My assessment was in this context; " ... when the lights were the brightest ...". IMO, that would be Pitt in 2022 and Texas in 2023.
Only the players and coaches know if surpassing some rivals and getting on the podium is good enough. Or, do they think it's Natty or bust with the talent they have?
Winning championships is hard. Really hard. One team is going to win six straight matches against increasingly tough competition, and 63 others are not. Absolutely. Nebraska, who seemingly brings in top recruits every year, has won 2 in the last 16 years. It’s hard and it’s going to keep getting harder as the sport continues to grow. The goal for Wisconsin right now is absolutely another Championship. But not achieving that doesn’t mean the season was a failure. Getting to the final four is a big deal. We have a good chance of being right back here next year with another shot.

Some people seem to think we’ve won 10 national titles and only getting to the Elite 8 or Final 4 or Finals is an embarrassment. I like this board for information and analysis purposes. But I really just need to stop coming on here and enjoy my positive vibes from our incredible success of the past 10 years on my own.

There are individual-year banners in the Field House for Final Four appearances. At some point for 'space', that might change. But for the time being, there are individual-year banners in the Field House for that accomplishment of a Final Four appearance.
