It was clear from Sheffield's full comments that the hitters did bail them out of a bad SR period in this match, but that it was something that also had to get a lot better.

From the WSJ online match write-up: "Wisconsin’s hitters played as well as they could have, setting the program record for hitting percentage in a five-set match at .313 after it posted a .586 hitting percentage in the opening set. Wisconsin held Tennessee to just .205 hitting overall. But 13 reception errors nearly sunk the Badgers to their first loss of the season but they have "the attackers to hit out of trouble," Badgers coach Kelly Sheffield said....
Wisconsin imposed itself in a way it wasn’t able to in its first match against Arkansas Wednesday, where the Razorbacks were also playing with a shorter block than the Badgers. But Sunday, Tennessee struggled with almost everything around the net for much of the match as Wisconsin combined for 29 total blocks (Booth led with eight) ..."
Wisconsin did not have 29 blocks. As a team they had 16; three were solo, and 13 were combo blocks, generating 26 individual block assists.

I always love these arm chair quarterback discussions.
While I am not saying that GG played well, perhaps at this point in the season, she is the best option. No one knows for sure if there is something magic on the bench. We don't attend practice.
4 straight Big Tens. Let's just move along and see how it plays out.

This team will never make a final four much less go further with GG passing 6 rotations. This team had a swing to go up 14-12 last year in the EE against Pitt in the fifth set with GG having a %*$#ty game also. At this point, idk if GG will ever pass better, but I have seen her pass better than this %*$# that she just did. However, Sheff constantly switching lineups is adding problems in defense that was not there last season. This is also partly on Sheff right now. This is true. Most of the time GG passed better than this and those last two matches in the regional. And badgers were still 1 good swing from a final 4. She really doesn't have to improve that much. BUT you have to be able to depend on her doing better. Also, if she is receiving serve, she can't take second ball. So she has to get it to the setters, who appear to have done real work to improve getting their feet to the ball and setting under unusual situations. That really showed up today.

I didn't care for our middle defense... Tennesseee kept shoving it down our throats. Tennessee was very physical and took the no-@$$%*!* attitude Eve coaches with, and I like that. They'll be a Sweet 16 for sure. I'm not sold Anna can do it on RS. Let's try Temi on the right..... GG was way off today.... Will Wrobel ever get a chance?? Ever??? Orzol just cannot put away balls at this level... Keep ker at Bro for passing purposes.... GG gets too tight in big matches. Franklin giving me Loberg nightmares... STOP TIPPING, you're not fooling anyone! HIT THE DAMN BALL! TTA needs to be out there somehow....if not, what an absolute waste. What happened to the woman P.A. announcer?? I missed her today! PPPPooooint WizzKonzen Today Smrek has 7 kills and hit .500, four blocks. For the year so far, she's getting 2.2 kills per set, hitting .427, with just under a block per set. Franklin has 23 kills today and hit .352. Something she was doing was working... Yeah, really hard to criticize the hitters. Oh how the times have changed!

There is alot more intagibles than just hitting percentages -- case and point we outscored TENN by one point for the match. Most times Anna is out of position and beat by hitters. Her reaction on broken plays is abysmal. She's 6-10, and has trouble with over passes?!? She is more effective MB hitting the 3-1 ball. Franklin is fine, but she's a liability -- in passing rotation she hardly passes to allow the middles to score. Floor defense is weak. I still take Franklin over Orzol (or Loberg).... but she needs to hit with more intent and her shot selection is poor and predictable. Guess that's the difference with actually playing and having court awareness and being a casual observer with a certain metric to success. There is other point patterns that are scored within a certain system and it's not just about Hitting % -- if this were the case, Wisky should of swept with ease. Best description is a 5'6 outside hitter (tho listed at 5'7) x factor that destroys 6'9 and 6'7 at OH position and really had no business going five with the no. 1 team -- again, different on court match up's and court personnel kept that match in line. Robinson could hit .670, and it still could go five, not god.

There's a lot of pressure on GG. Anyone would feel it and GG certainly does: 19 years old and thousands of mile from home, just for starters. What do you about that if you're the coach. Can you responsibly let her continue to be used as a pinata? She's turning 21 next month. LOL....

She's played at a high level for the last 4-5 years... Either step up or move aside. I haven't given up on her just yet, but seeing her freak in big matches and in several 5th sets, I hope she makes some breakthroughs in the next weeks.o She has grean-court energy, I love her for that -- but the skill must match the energy.

Sarah’s shot selection is poor and predictable? yet she did hit .352, had four errors in a five set match, in a late point in set 5 her shot took us from being way out of system to TN being way out of system, and she had the winning shot on a crafty tool.

A win is a win is a win. Beating a ranked team is a good thing! They will work on things, but, yay, 5-0, with 4 wins over ranked teams!

Sometimes, even real natural ability and experience can't break through because the brain has other ideas. The best example I can think of is former UW quarterback Graham Mertz. Same mistakes year after year because he couldn't get out of his own way mentally and could be counted on to throw an interception at the most inopportune times. I sincerely hope for a better outcome for GG. Young and resilient may win out before it's too late. And, GG has a better coach than Mertz did.

Has anyone mentioned (I believe) WI had 1 block in each of sets we lost (3 and 4). It is not that are block failed, but TN did a lot more tipping. Anyone watching the film of this match would say, to beat WI, serve the L and tip to the setters.

Anyone watching the film of this match would say, to beat WI, serve the L and tip to the setters. Tip coverage needs work, no doubt. They seemed to be sitting way back expecting the vols to whale away at the ball, and there were some monster digs back there. But they were on their heels and didn’t anticipate tips well, even when they were obvious. The blockers sometimes got in the way deflecting balls that would have been up. It was messy. I wonder if Dildine not being there helped with the slow BR adjustments.

Lucky. That's not going to take them very far. I've resisted saying Sheff is stubborn to a fault, but I'm changing sides on that one. He doesn't know what to do with what he's got and doesn't seem to be able to work around what he doesn't have. With GG and our setting tandem we won't make it past the Elight Eight again this season. How much longer before Sheffield benches GG and gives Boyer and or Dammrow a look? Digging this back up. Close but not quite. We Made the Final Four but the main points are the same. Our biggest backrow weakness at season beginning was 'sidelined' from libero position and at seasons end, we were regularly seeing poor Izzy sets tight to net and the Carter Booth/Izzy connection was tragic. We were able to get away from using a 'real' libero for most of season because of the sheer talent gap on some of our opponents Against Texas Franklin wore down and our back row was swiss cheese. Our setters were exposed. In set 4 I would have went 5-1 with Hammill just to get Smrek into the fold for more front row action. Sad for the girls. But that was a beat-down and an embarrassing result.
