I mean it is UNC. Don’t people just want to coach there because it is UNC? For volleyball, for the very best coaches - not necessarily. It's not basketball.
And generally, I guess there's the "thrill of the brand" but I'd imagine most people treat VB coaching like any other job - looking for best package that fits them. If it's not enough money, not a place they want to live, etc. - then they might not care that it's UNC.
Sorry I was being sarcastic :/

UNC trying to get all these high profile employed coaches with no interest; meanwhile Russ Rose doesn’t even have a job!

This is the most entertaining UNC thread in a long time 😁

Cripes, UNC, what are you doing? You are UNC, there is a lot of talent in the area, yeah, Pitt and Louisville have taken the step to national contenders, but, damn, no reason you can't get to third in the ACC and top 16 nationally pretty quickly! If you are not sorting between high quality applicants to find the best fit for quite a bit of time, what are you doing? If you care, and you should, with a gazillion national titles throughout all sports (South Carolina can have me consider calling them "Carolina" with about 50 more national titles, although wbb is the favorite for one this year, great program!), this should be a VERY good job opening!

I have today circled as D-day for UNC. They can be on the road recruiting next weekend if they announce a head today and at least one AC next week. I know some people said they were already losing ground in January, but I feel like there is less of a defense for their lack of progress if they don't have people hitting the road next Friday morning.
Ideally they will have someone to trot out at halftime of the basketball game tomorrow.

I know some people said they were already losing ground in January, but I feel like there is less of a defense for their lack of progress if they don't have people hitting the road next Friday morning. Ideally they will have someone to trot out at halftime of the basketball game tomorrow. Surely they have to announce. Generally these announcements seem to happen on weekdays between noon and 2ish. So there is still time. (And hilariously I thought admins may announce on Friday so they can ignore their inboxes and phones all weekend if they want and deal with any backlash on Monday. I don’t think that’s the case—but it did cross my mind.) I feel like they will surely announce before recruiting starts next week, but…if you’re Mike, do you go out recruiting in UNC gear if they haven’t named anyone yet? I mean, he is still employed there and could be the head coach soon. But going out recruiting without knowing would be really tough, and probably no one would even let him recruit because they would be asking him for the scoop. But to NOT go out recruiting and then afterwards to be named head would be kind of bad too—not to be seen at Triple Crown that weekend. I hope admins don’t let that become a decision Mike has to make.

i can guarantee you BC knows nothing about the recruiting timeline and club showcases for volleyball LOL I can first person guarantee you this is not true. And the 15's and 16's at Triple Crown that Mike cant talk to only see a UNC logo at their court not a distinction in what his role is.

You think Bubba Cunningham, the AD at UNC, has any idea of 15s, 16s, 17s, Triple Crown and how the club system for volleyball works? Given that he has shown to numerous people he has had to have a lot of outside help even being pointed in the direction to go to make a vball hire? I find that surprising. Oh and we still dont have a hire even when he was working behind the scenes once the season ended back in Nov/Dec and here we are in February.

And he could recite the same for every sport he has. Recruiting is the lifeblood of every sport and as a good AD, he knows. You honestly think rules were put in place several years to slow down volleyball recruiting timelines to prevent 14's from committing was done all the while AD's didnt know how recruiting works and the difference in USAV vs AAU, etc? You think AD's havent shown up at OPEN courts in Atlanta, Philly, Orlando, Indy, Dallas, KC, etc? You think AD's havent pondered how free entreprise club volleyball has prospered over the last 20 years and schools/AD arent interested in getting their arms around the revenue model? To answer your second question, yes he (and other good AD's) have and always reach out to constituents/industry friends/etc for perspective. Not because he doesnt know. I know this because I got one of those calls. The notion that these AD's are blind may be a good message board post but its off.

BC may have the technical knowledge of how things work from an administrative standpoint, but from a practical side and the conversations he has had with numerous volleyball players and parents at UNC as well as stakeholders, that is one of the sports he has the least amount of practical knowledge based on my understanding. You can understand models and textbook policies all day long, but the fact that this process has taken this long raises plenty of red flags along with the comments he has made the last 5 years about how the team was "trending up." Those were his own words. I have personally shared with him the struggles of this program the last 5 years and he brushed them off and absolutely had no idea the state of UNC Vball in the ACC and national scheme except they were "doing well." I don't see the program trending up in any season the last 5 years. I will eat my words if it happens, but knowing how important the recruiting cycle is and we still don't have an announcement is troubling and isnt necessarily setting yourself up for success. Those girls do indeed see a UNC logo, but other than the school itself, their parents want them to choose a school that can offer them a good volleyball experience, good education, with a stable face as a coach they trust. So, yes, it does make a difference who is on the sideline and in what capacity. Taking your time and researching the best candidate is admirable and responsible, but I would love to compare this hiring length to the length of other major Power 5 schools in hiring a HC.

I'm not from UNC so not going to debate your insights there. But I know the school, the industy and Joe and Bubba. I think its a great job and great school. The sport has never had more talent or parity. Right now there's about 6 programs and the next 30 you could blindly pick one. UNC is one of them. The problem the sport has is there are too many good players on too many rosters and a substitution system that leaves too many sitting. Its going to be hard to break out of the pack when kids want to transfer every time they miss a rotation.
