Some people tell you everything you need to know without even having to ask a question.

We can agree to disagree. BC may have the technical knowledge of how things work from an administrative standpoint, but from a practical side and the conversations he has had with numerous volleyball players and parents at UNC as well as stakeholders, that is one of the sports he has the least amount of practical knowledge based on my understanding. You can understand models and textbook policies all day long, but the fact that this process has taken this long raises plenty of red flags along with the comments he has made the last 5 years about how the team was "trending up." Those were his own words. I have personally shared with him the struggles of this program the last 5 years and he brushed them off and absolutely had no idea the state of UNC Vball in the ACC and national scheme except they were "doing well." I don't see the program trending up in any season the last 5 years. I will eat my words if it happens, but knowing how important the recruiting cycle is and we still don't have an announcement is troubling and isnt necessarily setting yourself up for success. Those girls do indeed see a UNC logo, but other than the school itself, their parents want them to choose a school that can offer them a good volleyball experience, good education, with a stable face as a coach they trust. So, yes, it does make a difference who is on the sideline and in what capacity. Taking your time and researching the best candidate is admirable and responsible, but I would love to compare this hiring length to the length of other major Power 5 schools in hiring a HC. All good. I'm not from UNC so not going to debate your insights there. But I know the school, the industy and Joe and Bubba. I think its a great job and great school. The sport has never had more talent or parity. Right now there's about 6 programs and the next 30 you could blindly pick one. UNC is one of them. The problem the sport has is there are too many good players on too many rosters and a substitution system that leaves too many sitting. Its going to be hard to break out of the pack when kids want to transfer every time they miss a rotation. The problem is too few coaches capable of managing the talent. Club, and college, is full of teams running a crappy system and simply rotating players in and out of that system.

My only comment on rosters from a macro level is that there are 20+-player rosters today and 30 years ago there were mostly 12-14 player rosters. Coaches were running 62/51 then playing 10 people and they are mostly doing that today.
Game management hasnt really evolved in that respect. Tactics yes. Roster management, though, is an animal like never before. Its hard to keep that many kids happy when they all played OPEN somewhere and spent their youth on airplanes.
As the talent pool continues to grow, this problem only gets worse if the game doesnt evolve.

As the talent pool continues to grow, this problem only gets worse if the game doesnt evolve. Specialization (and the increased level players are coming in at overall) makes this worse. You can't really train someone up to be a middle blocker at the college level in a pre-season - coaches used to do that. So you can't really roll with 13 players and have depth in case of injuries anymore and expect to freely move players around, esp. if half your pins have never played back row, your middles don't serve or time an approach on a high ball, and you have an army of DS's who don't know how to block.

You think Bubba Cunningham, the AD at UNC, has any idea of 15s, 16s, 17s, Triple Crown and how the club system for volleyball works? Given that he has shown to numerous people he has had to have a lot of outside help even being pointed in the direction to go to make a vball hire? I find that surprising. Oh and we still dont have a hire even when he was working behind the scenes once the season ended back in Nov/Dec and here we are in February. I know this because I got one of those calls.Bubba called you? Awesome. Could you, maybe, give him a call back and ask him to hire someone already? And to please, please make it a good - nay, a great - hire? Cool, thanks. I'd really appreciate it.

I have confirmed through an applicant that the search has not been reopened. An announcement is expected "in due time" - no kidding.
Sorry I do not know more.

This is a little ridiculous… how have they not named a coach yet?

Still shorter than Syracuse's search last year...

This is a little ridiculous… how have they not named a coach yet? It has taken the time it needed to take apparently. So let’s say it gets announced Monday or Tuesday—sure the new HC will have the chance to go recruit. But there is no way any new ACs are in place even in the next two weekends. I don’t see JS going out recruiting in this case—so does the new HC deputize ops quickly to have more eyes in the gym that first weekend? Most likely the future ACs will still be out recruiting for their current program so it’s not like they won’t be out, but what’s a realistic time to get the ACs in? It would undoubtably be faster than the HC process.

I have today circled as D-day for UNC. They can be on the road recruiting next weekend if they announce a head today and at least one AC next week. I know some people said they were already losing ground in January, but I feel like there is less of a defense for their lack of progress if they don't have people hitting the road next Friday morning. Ideally they will have someone to trot out at halftime of the basketball game tomorrow. Well... they DID have a UNC Volleyball recognition at the game: Maybe (hopefully) that means the announcement is soon?

Being Carolina, they very well could have delayed till the end-of-week MBB game to honor JS properly, before announcing on what I’m thinking will be Monday. That could be the #1 reason, honestly. I’ll just say it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. Glad Coach Sagula got a nice recognition and “send off.”
Thinking their top candidate gets told tomorrow or maybe got told today and presser on Monday or Tuesday afternoon?

I think there is barely any chance that UNC announces the day after the Superbowl.

I think there is barely any chance that UNC announces the day after the Superbowl. Why? Is UNC playing in it or something?
