I think there is barely any chance that UNC announces the day after the Superbowl. Why? Is UNC playing in it or something? This was partly a joke and partly about UNC clearly not being in any hurry to name the new coach. I think end of the week is more likely than today, but I do not know the schedule.

UNC will be announcing this week IMO. One I would love, one I would live with, and one would be a headscratcher. I do wonder with BC being in Charlotte most of last week if it will be mid to late week.

I don't know him personally. I know he is super well respected in the sport, but given the lack of success UNC has had with him on the bench, I guess I am so shocked at how so many people are saying he'd be the absolute best for the job.

I can certainly understand that.
For me, it is very hard to get past what the program has looked like since he's been here. That is not his fault, obviously... that falls on Joe. But there are still some areas that I felt like we fell short in that I thought he would be super involved in - lack of adjustments in game, opponent scouting and prep, lack of development of the players in the program. So sometimes it is hard for me to grasp the overwhelming support he's getting and people saying he'd be the slam dunk hire. Do they think so because he's a really great coach? Or do they say that because he's a nice guy and people want him to get his shot?
If Mike is the choice, I hope he crushes it. I want our program to be successful. Ultimately, whoever it is, we need to see what kind of staff they can put together. If he's as well respected and connected as people are saying, there is the hope he can do that... if BC is going to pay for it.

Based on the feedback on this thread and it seems like he could have had just about any open head coach job that was open. He prioritized the family and staying in Apex, so immediately what comes to mind is the NC State job that was open a couple of years ago. I am not sure if he applied for it. It probably would have been closer for him to his house even.

Mike Schall was the first thought I had when I heard Joe retired, and I'd even forgotten for the moment that he was now the assistant there, that was just based off of Penn State, Triangle and his reputation. If they hire him I'll have full faith in UNC volleyball to accomplish what it's funding and support can allow it to accomplish.
I don't follow UNC on a day to day basis so looking at the roster and given that he's been there a few years, I would have expected more Triangle players to stay home or transfer back since then. (Maybe Joe didn't want more?)
I would have expected him to be named the interim when Joe announced his retirement. You can name him interim and still call whoever you want to call. The article said Joe would continue.
And I would not have expected this to take over a month if they knew they had legitimate option in house.
None of that means he won't or shouldn't be hired - I think he'd be a great choice - but it feels like they want to go another way.

That's what a friend of mine used to say who just happened to be a graduate of UNC. He was implying that NC State was UNC's little brother, sort of like MIchigan St vs Michigan.

Yea, we’re all familiar with it. But NC State finished above UNC in the ACC this year so can’t talk too much crap right now.
