Does Sheffield say uncle and give it a rest, or does he and Marquette do an American Family Field event (which the Badger basketball teams just did and which has no rain risk). Or does he say that the record isn't important when the viewing experience is ... really bad for most ? And of course UW Marquette, especially in Milwaukee instead of Madison, may not draw nearly as well as Memorial, but it'd be interesting to see how well it would. I really doubt he'd consider Camp Randall. Jerritt Elliott had been in discussion with the American Airlines Center this past Fall hoping to have a future volleyball showcase in Dallas and wanting to set the all-time attendance record; I didn't think that would be possible (fan attendance) at a neutral site unless the opponent Texas matched up with would be able to bring thousands of fans; only Nebraska came to mind. I wasn't really in favor of this type of setup solely for the purpose of breaking an attendance record. Texas barely plays in front of 5,000 fans in its home gym in Austin. So, perhaps first having a match in the new home basketball arena with hopes of trying to get 10,000 or more fans to attend in Austin would be a more realistic first step. With Nebraska doing this at a football stadium, that probably squashes the above idea (at AAC). Then again, Dallas has retractable roof football stadium and brand new retractable roof stadium for baseball; so, maybe that's the future!

Next year, Michigan plays a single set of volleyball in Michigan Stadium during half time of the UM-OSU game and sets a record that literally can’t be broken. Bc that’s where things are now I guess. 😭 First off, half time doesn’t last at least two hours. Secondly, make it a separate day away from a Saturday or non-football day. Thirdly, don’t charge like going to a high school sporting event or less than ten dollars for adults. That way to judge true interest in a women’s sport. The pocketbook, like most things, demonstrates need and/or true interest. Nebraska will destroy the current record and the adults will pay substantially over the Wisconsin record. The only thing to stop it will be Mother Nature. imo.

I just want to say I think this is awesome. Sometimes it’s not about how good the seats are. It’s simply about being a part of the experience. I remember before Lew Alcindor’s UCLA played Elvin Hayes’ UH team in the Astrodome, nobody really considered basketball being played in a huge stadium. Gotta start somewhere. Of course, that was indoors. Still, the principle is similar. No better place to try to pull something like this off than the state of Nebraska. Nothing against Omaha, but I do wish the opponent was a little more prominent, but that’s nit picking a bit. Mostly I’m just glad it’s occurring st all. I remember that too. I forgot about that record. Thank you. That was a record that a than 12 year old or so didn’t appreciate at the time.

What gets lost a little bit is the charge for an average ticket. I was at CHI for the Creighton-Nebraska match in 2022. Like the previous regular season attendance record match a few years earlier, i believe. I paid a lot more than $20 for a ticket from Ticketmaster. You can set records for volleyball at less than $10 a ticket, like Wisconsin. Maybe thousands got in for free?

Luckily for you, Nebraska plays between 15-20 home games a year in the largest volleyball-centric facility in the country, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to do that this year should you choose to do so. One event game in the middle of the week hardly ruins the Nebraska Volleyball experience for 2023. I mean, it basically amounts to another item in the John Cook Vanity Project. I don't think it will ruin the 2023 season. I just find it mildly ridiculous, especially for something that isn't likely to be a super competitive match. Want a hanky to cry in?

In the basketball setup, the Kohl Center seats something like 11K in the first level, and 3K each for the second and third. I don't know what students were charged, but 'student sections' and the first and second levels are only two of twenty-eight around the arena. Where did you get "Maybe thousands got in for free?"?

He views it as a distraction but understands the importance for the state and the sport. Nothing close to a vanity project for Cook.

From the Wisconsin official athletic website and/or season ticket holders for badger volleyball. I think many tickets for regular season matches are around $8 after research at the Kohl record. I asked on this forum too.

The work Terry Pettit did continues to pay off for Nebraska. I remember one of the earlier final fours in Omaha I met a man who had been on the ticket wait list for years but never got one and was finally going to get to his first Husker volleyball match. He was like a 4 year old about to enter Disney.
There are people who cannot get in to Devaney or even CHI and just want to go. There are people who will go to support the 3 other teams. There are people who will go just to say they went.
And that's going to make like 30,000 people, buying tickets, buying hotdogs, paying for parking... so if anyone is wondering why they are doing this, why not! They can cover Cook's base salary in one day!
Also, FWIW, you don't want this to be a competitive match. With sun and wind and stadium lights and maybe moisture on the court, or maybe an uneven court, you don't play a match that will be 2-4 point sets where conditions could swing the match, you have to do this with a match that is going to be 10 point sets.

I asked on this forum too. Well, I'm a UW season ticket holder. General admission tickets for season ticket holders were about $7 per match for the 13 Field House matches this past year, reserved tickets were higher, some much higher; mine were around $15 per match. The most expensive were about twice that. For the Florida match, my ticket through my season ticket was $15. I also bought a seat for a neighbor in the first level, and it was $15. I have friends who bought tickets in the third level, and they were $5. I mentioned students because students can buy something called a "Red Card" that gets them access to tickets for multiple sports, volleyball included, for $25 for the year. But the number of seats available to student Red Card holders is limited to the student sections. I don't know of any 'free tickets' to the Florida match, other than if you want to call those Red Card seats 'free'. I do find references at the web site for 'group pricing' for the Florida match for $4; I'll assume they were in the third and maybe some in the second level. (And I'm not even sure the Florida match was available to Red Card holders in the first place. I assume it was, but I don't know for certain.)

Very cool idea. I wouldn't be surprised if they drew 50,000 or more, just for the spectacle.
Probably offers some really significant sponsorship opportunities, too.

Bc that’s where things are now I guess. 😭 Meh. Single sets don't count. I remember suggesting a few years ago that Hawaii should hold a pre-conference tournament every year and play it outdoors. Some Hawaii fans suggested winds might be a problem. Still think it would be a great concept.

I would think Nebraska would do something similar to the Wisconsin/Florida match. There's no way every ticket is going to be $15/$20. Tiered pricing, $5 seats for the nosebleeds. Makes sense.

FYI - I know if you google it, the interwebs say Memorial Stadium's capacity is 90,000, but it hasn't been that high in years. They've been reducing seats gradually. I think it sits at 85K right now.
With court-side seats, they could possibly push 90k, though. We'll have to see how they set it up.
