Probably better for his pro career, he has potential to be impactful at the Olympic/national team comp level but far from a top prospect. Will be interesting to see if the Italian federation can develop him better although most of player development at his age is done during professional season. maybe this will give him an advantage, motivating the professional teams to invest in him more.

Oh I definitely wish nothing but the best for Sani. Really hoping he develops into a great OPP for the Italians, a position I feel they're pretty thin in.

probably will just have to sit out for a year or two before he can play for the national team in Italy if interested
I'm fairly certain the main motivation for this switch is for a better pro career

There is something I don't understand. In order to play as "Italian" he must, according to FIVB rules, change Federation of Origin. Chapter 1.5 He should then have residence for 3 years in Italy and an Italian passport. They probably practiced with Antropova, however, they were lightning fast to submit the documentation....

Looks like the men's team will be in the Philippines for VNL 2024.

He is using his Italian heritage so he can play as a local in the Italian League thus not affecting the foreign quota of his club team. That doesn't mean that he won't be able to play in US National Team. Same case for Rosamaria of Brazilian Women's National Team. When she played in Italian club, she was counted as a local but she is still playing for her Brazilian National Team. All Sani needs is to get his Italian passport and he'll be counted as local.

Some per set stats from the Italian League so far, assuming I calculated them correctly
Kyle Russell - 2.33 kills, 0.35 aces, 0.19 blocks. 38.6 kill %, 0.197 efficiency Gabi - 2.83 kills, 0.57 aces, 0.15 blocks. 43 kill %, 0.243 efficiency
Jendryk - 1.45 kills, 0.06 aces, 0.51 blocks. 56.8 kill %, 0.488 efficiency
Sani - 2.48 kills, 0.13 aces, 0.26 blocks. 44.5 kill %, 0.283 efficiency
Honestly, not the greatest starts for either of the opposites to say the least. Jendryk has been decent considering the struggles on his team. Sani pretty solid numbers as well.

In terms of attacking, both opposites are bad, considering they do not need to focus on receiving the ball. They are the two worst start-up oppos in Italian league if I am not mistaken, considering the Exc% and Effic%. It is not promising to stay in Italian League after this performance. Or maybe sadly, this is their ability and Italian league is too high for them. Jendryk is good, attacking and blocking, pretty solid. Sani is also good, at least better than the two oppos, makes me wonder why Speraw does not bring him to VNL last year/this year.

remains to be seen if Sani is having one of those rookie seasons until everyone gets way more film on him and starts to shut him down

I believe the Italian website only uses errors to calculate efficiency, I included blocked. I hope Gabi can improve on those numbers over the second half of the season

I thought one only needs an Italian passport to be counted as a local player in Italy, which could be the case with Sani. If he suits up for team USA this summer, that would solve this mystery.

I hope Gabi can improve on those numbers over the second half of the season Italian efficiency does not take blocks into account, only errors. Polish attack efficiency is along the same lines as hitting percentage in the United States. Jake Hanes is in Poland and has the following stats: 130 kills, 3.25 kills per set, 44.83 attack percentage, 27.24 attack efficiency, 12 blocks, 0.30 blocks per set, 18 aces, 0.40 aces per set All three of these American opposites are on some of the worst teams in their respective leagues.
