If McCarthy loses this vote, he'll make another run at it. He will have 2 or 3 days to make another deal.

Nah, they'll have one by tomorrow I bet. who? that 10 votes can remove a Speaker of the House. insane, but McCarthy dug his own grave to get the job Someone acceptable (for now) to the Gaetz faction who will likely become unacceptable the moment they try to pass anything.

what happens if there is no speaker indefinitely In the House, nothing. There needs to be a majority to do anything and presumably the same majority which could move business forward would be the one which can elect a Speaker.

You have to be nominated. Technically, the Speaker of the House doesn't have to be a member of the House. They could elect anyone and it's not even clear they would have to be an American citizen. The Speaker is 3rd in line for the Presidency.

The Speaker is 3rd in line for the Presidency. Technically second in line. Presidential succession is governed by an act of Congress, not the Constitution and the latter doesn't set any requirements for the Speaker other than they must be selected by Congress. One of those areas where the Presidential Succession Act could be unconstitutional!
As for presidential succession, it's not super obvious what happens if someone ineligible for the presidency were to end up in the line of succession (like if Ilhan Omar or Victoria Spartz became Speaker). Do you just skip over that person and onto the next? Seems like it. It hasn't happened under the 1947 law.(edit: after looking at the actual law, it seems like anyone ineligible for the office is skipped over, so choosing an non-citizen as Speaker would be permissible) Also, putting legislators in the line of succession is bad and dumb and we shouldn't do that. The incentives are all wrong.

The Speaker is 3rd in line for the Presidency. Technically second in line. Well, I was counting the current President. I was guessing that anyone ineligible would be skipped over, but thanks for looking it up and confirming that.

The incentives are all wrong. It's specifically accounted for in the US Constitution, but where Congress must enact a law to determine that. And it's obviously not like the stupidity of the Independent State Legislature Theory where Congress can somehow decide what to do without passing a law nor of facing a Presidential veto. It also includes a provision where a disability may be considered temporary and the Presidency restored - i.e. create an acting President. In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.

I think if McCarthy gets ousted, he's not getting the position back. It will be some other Republican, probably someone who will say that he or she is only taking the job in order to help the House heal and move on.
I don't think the Democrats will provide McCarthy the votes to stay on -- not after the way he forced Biden into negotiating over the debt ceiling and then immediately backtracked from the deal. McCarthy has burned all his bridges with the Democrats trying to keep Gaetz from doing this, and Gaetz went ahead and did it anyway.
But the question is whether the Democrats would force the GOP to find another Speaker with only their own votes, or if the Dems would accept a deal and vote for a GOP candidate. Problem is, I don't know what sort of deal they could take that they would trust the new Speaker to stick to.

They would have to be offered some power-sharing, but like I said, I don't think they could trust a new GOP Speaker to even be able to follow through on that, even if it was offered to them. I don't think it's going to happen. A new Speaker could offer to do things like restore the committee memberships that the GOP stripped away from Schiff, Swallwell, and Omar. That would be a mostly symbolic gesture of some sort of lessening of the partisan bloodletting.

I think I would qualify for Master Speaker of the house but the next in line after me, would become President should something happen to the POTUS and VPOTUS.

My point was they could elect literally anyone in the world to be Speaker! We could access an entirely new level of buffoonery if we can get the GOP to think outside the box. Doug Ford! Liz Truss! Psy!
