Sorry, probably dumb questions. But- Does anyone know why Sheffield is upset about the PVF announcements? How does the timing affect the team? And, if we dropped to 7 after losing to nebraska, why wouldn't stanford drop back to 7 if they lose to louisville? Would their match be too close to the selection show to count? Sheffield has a reasonable point that nobody ever holds a draft during the college season. It's a little ridiculous that the PVF would do it and does smell a bit of desperation, trying to get athlete's names on their ledger before LOVB or the international game would theoretically have a chance. I also think this ties into a lot of the things he was saying before the USC/UCLA matches about the rhythm of the week, the day, where practices and meals and the controllable part of the gameday schedule goes. Most coaches want most of the variables they can control to be locked down at this point so they can focus on peaking for the stretch run, and anything that flings any manner of a wrench into those gears is very unwelcome.

I'm curious, why did Smrek get drafted so low? I'm guessing it's because of PVF's 8 substitution limit because Smrek has to play 6ro which means she has to defend and swing from the back row Kendall Kipp style so she wouldn't play as much and come in as a situational player if her team has subs left. In NCAA with the 15 sub limit the team can afford to play Smrek at 3ro at OPP before subbing her off and at PVF that cannot be the case anymore. Devyn has the capability to play 6ro especially that she also swung from the back row for the collegiate USA team and is more mobile than Smrek and the reason why she's not is because Anna is ahead of her at OPP and is playing more of a hybrid OPP/MB role which can be afforded with the higher NCAA sub limits and Smrek's huge blocking presence on the RS which forces OH to change their hitting style, Devyn doesn't have the RS blocking intimidation threat that Smrek has maybe because she's shorter and her arms aren't as long as Smrek's. CC has shown that she can be a solid middle and is decently quick to the pins and is an excellent blocker. Because she's not actually going to play in the PVF. It was a hail mary that failed and all their social media posts referencing drafting her have been deleted.

Unfortunately, it's also a timing thing -- their season starts Jan 10th and they still need to get people in for training camps and then cut their roster to the league max. The tournament doesn't start until Dec 1ish and runs for 3 weeks. I would MUCH rather the draft be now, when there's still a week of regular season play, than any time after selection day. Having it now gets it out of the way and the tournament teams don't have to think about it during the tourney.

If she's not gonna play PVF, do you think she's going overseas or retire from Volleyball like Barnes seemed to do? Well, they still have this post here which looks to be outdated. http://instagram.com/p/DCzlvsvy2Zq

What you did was just pick a lesser evil. Is there something that prohibits the PVF from starting playing in Feb instead of Jan that I am not aware of?

I thought this same thing. On the other hand, I guess if I'm a professional sports league, I have no obligation to get my calendar approved by NCAA coaches. I know nothing about professional volleyball, though, so I admit my perspective comes from a place of ignorance.

I don't think he's wrong, but also important to note that his kid plays at LOVB's Madison Club. I don't understand why that would be "important". He's objecting to something PVF did, not anything LOVB has done. I think the implication is that with 2 completing domestic leagues, when someone has family ties to one of the leagues, criticism of the other league comes with some inherent conflict of interest. Conflict of interest doesn't automatically mean the criticism is invalid. But I don't think any other coach that had multiple players drafted has come out so publicly against the timing of this draft.

Per Sarah Pavan’s YouTube analysis Return Orzol to back row while your back court is ailing Takes pressure off Saige and Sarah poaching serves and getting exhausted A detailed and scathing no holds barred review of the NEB match Their argument made sense They excoriated my Gophers a couple of weeks ago I’m rooting for a bunch of B1G teams to go deep next month Yeah. I think this is a dumb analysis. She's just flat wrong. Badgers would not have got past 15 in any set if they had done that. The passing wasn't the problem until the end of the 3rd set. The badgers just did not execute well enough against a team playing well. Part of that is down to having subpar OOS setting and serving due to the absence of Saige and GG, but there was plenty of blame to go around. The whole team was jumpy and nervous. It reminded me of the Texas match last year.

This is the point I'm also stuck on. The PVF picked its start date (LOVB too, for that matter.) I get you want to ride the wave of enthusiasm coming out of the NCAA Tournament and that you may not want your indoor sport schedule bleeding too far into the "nice" months, but the time crunch is entirely of their own making. There's also a pair of issues that I think make the thing particularly weird. The first is the disconnect between the draft and the league start, where for instance Devyn gets drafted and then tomorrow... remains a Badger for up to another month. It's one thing for a sport like hockey where you draft a player and then you have their rights, I feel like they've trapped themselves in between a more standard draft (drafting graduates) and a baseball/hockey rights draft. The second is that the Anna Smrek pick showed a real amateur hour element to it. The fact that Orlando tried to memory hole that pick so aggressively so quickly is borderline farcical. They should have taken a page from another upstart league (the PWHL) and had players declare their interest and drafted from there. Then it would have been a slightly more meaningful draft.

Thinking today about the Badgers chances in the upcoming tourney. They'll get 2 home matches 1st & 2nd round that they should win. After that, if the Badgers play up to their full potential, there's no reason they can't win this thing. When I think about Badgers at their best, they can go with anybody. I truly believe that. It's unfortunate that it seems them playing to that full potential for 4 straight games is an idea that's out of reach. But how fun will it be if they do?... A lot! Let's go Badgers!!!

They can certainly win. Playing at their highest level I think they are the best team in the country. They just haven't been consistent enough. They need to show more resilience and more fight when the other team is playing well. Take their shots and get straight back at it. When they go down 2 sets, they need to know they can get back to their best play, not let doubt spread.
They need to believe they belong. They just have to believe it.
