I don't understand why that would be "important". He's objecting to something PVF did, not anything LOVB has done. I think the implication is that with 2 completing domestic leagues, when someone has family ties to one of the leagues, criticism of the other league comes with some inherent conflict of interest. Conflict of interest doesn't automatically mean the criticism is invalid. But I don't think any other coach that had multiple players drafted has come out so publicly against the timing of this draft. Isn't the conflict of interest well beyond "family ties" given Carlini's role in both LOVB and the Badgers coaching staff? Not to mention that Fuerbringer's dad is the LOVB coach. All of that said, I tend to think Sheffield was probably sincere. I would find it hard to believe that he was intentionally trying to tank LOVB's competition (not that radioactiveman was suggesting this).

Unfortunately, it's also a timing thing -- their season starts Jan 10th and they still need to get people in for training camps and then cut their roster to the league max. The tournament doesn't start until Dec 1ish and runs for 3 weeks. I would MUCH rather the draft be now, when there's still a week of regular season play, than any time after selection day. Having it now gets it out of the way and the tournament teams don't have to think about it during the tourney.
What you did was just pick a lesser evil. Is there something that prohibits the PVF from starting playing in Feb instead of Jan that I am not aware of?
Them starting in February is not practical. They are trying to get in as much of a season as possible before the summer international events - last year the PVF season ended after all the foreign leagues and barely before VNL started (not that they really have many players who are playing for their national teams ... but they'd like to get more). Frankly, a 4 1/2 month volleyball season, including playoffs, is pretty short - it's hard to think of any pro leagues with that short of a regular season. Honestly, I'm surprised they're starting as late as January 9, they should start the weekend after New Year's Day. I didn't like the PVF draft during the season either, but I don't think the start time of their league can be pushed back. This is a league that is trying to gain financial stability, and playing an extra three weeks - 6 or so games for each team - probably means about 10,000 or more total tickets sold per team, probably over $200k, for teams which are probably bringing in $2-3 million in revenue per year right now. I'm sure there are offsetting costs to that but gaining or losing 10% in revenue can make or break a business. And that's a conservative estimate - for Omaha it's more like 30,000 tickets meaning somewhere around $750k if I'm reading their ticket prices right, against costs that can't be more than $100,000 if player salaries aren't increased for this - and if they are, you get to pay your players more helping you compete for top talent.

So bracketology has the Badgers as the 7 or 8. Assuming* we get that far, who would you rather take on in a regional final, Nebraska or Pitt, and why? Who do you think we match up better against? Would you rather play a team a third time, or try to flip the Regional Final spoiler role with Pitt. I guess I'm thinking we could apply service pressure better on Pitt (if we are healthy) and get the block involved more. And regardless of opponent, I think we need to get Devyn the ball more and have her produce to open up the block for Frank (and Orzol). BTW, I'm not assuming the Badgers get that far, some dangerous teams in the 2nd round, and then possibly Texas, Kansas, ASU, Purdue... in the regional semi. I'll take Pitt over NE at this point. The home advantage is not as big, revenge factor for them beating us at the Field House a couple of years ago in regional finals, and most importantly NE beat us twice already. That's not to say that I think we would beat Pitt, but just in terms of who I'd like to see us play. I know Pitt would be an enormous challenge, but I would absolutely LOVE to see the Badgers knock off Pitt in the regional final at Pitt. We really owe them for that crushing loss in five here a couple years ago. We sat behind the Pitt bench for both the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight matches, and their coach was such a jerk in both matches. Seeing him lose a heartbreaker at home would be so nice. :-)

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but a fit and firing team with it's best players back and less errors are good enough to win the whole thing. But that's just my over optimism.

I think a lot of us feel this way. We've seen how good this team can be. What gives me additional optimism is that we have 4 home games ahead of us to get us primed for the regional finals weekend and then watch out. The sweet 16 game will be huge, and if we make it to regional finals, the host team will be under way more pressure than us and that can be liberating.

It sadly was not as good as I hoped against Nebraska, due to Allick going off, but the rotation with Charlie serving and Franklin, Booth (usually, but it could be anyone and the point holds), and Smrek front row is probably the most fearsome Wisconsin has ever had. It was huge at Purdue. That is a potentially game changing X factor against anyone, anywhere.

Someone pointed out on Twitter yesterday that LOVB Madison has an open roster spot and their uniform numbers go from 12 to 14. lovb.com/teams/lovb-madison-volleyball/roster The WSJ story on the PVF draft said that Sarah told PVF that she was not interested in playing in the league and that she was going to play in LOVB or overseas. Their roster looks pretty stacked with OHs but it would be great to keep watching Sarah play as a professional (and getting set by Lauren).

If the team loses it's remaining fixtures to Ohio State and MSU at home then I'm putting a line through them for the title but they do provide some time to Lola and GG to get back to match fitness should they hopefully be available again.
