Worden, Phills and Steponaitis all showed physicality. Worden definitely was the more polished of that group and loved her energy. But all 3 touch 10 feet or higher so the ceiling is high and will see how the freshman grow being in the gym everyday. Do we know if any of them stayed in for 6 rotations? I heard Urquhart and Worden might have on opposite sides of the net, but there wasn't certainty. I wondered same. Yes, Urquhart and Worden were on different "teams" for the scrimmage, from what I've seen in some of the video snippets. Also hearing Garcia may have played 6 rotations for some or all of the scrimmage and did well? Also, haven't heard much about Vesty and how she did on left. So many questions! LOL!

Worden and Urquhart both played 6 rotations on opposite sides, same with Deery and Garcia. Urguhart’s ball control was good but offensively and blocking was unimpressive. Garcia played well, made a few errors but pretty typical of a freshman. Vesty played 1 set on the outside and seemed very similar to Urquhart, ball control was decent but offensively was lacking. Deery was physical and aggressive in the front row hitting and blocking. The freshman and transfers are all seemingly having an immediate and big impact which is great to see.

Thank you so much for the insight! Love hearing that about Deery. She impressed me last fall...fearlessly stepped in when her number was called to help out on the right. Wonder if there would be consideration for having her hit on the left so we'd have Garcia and Deery both on the floor? I believe she hit on the left in her final year of high school. Hmmm... Since we have a great observer from last Saturday on the line , any insight into the middles? Would think Whittingstall and Davis have the inside track but Gibson and Stojanovic are unknowns. Any thoughts/observations about them? Again, thank you for the intel.

Great question on Deery on the left…would be an interesting experiment and then let the freshman battle it out for the last OH spot…either way, I don’t really see how they could get out of DS’ing both left sides. The best passers offense was just so anemic they need the athletic outsides on the floor. By DS’ing the OHs they should be able to pass well enough to get the middles and Ameraal involved in the offense…then hope the athleticism is good enough to get them to terminate when out of system.

Thank you for this. Such great info and observations! Yes, I just did some quick research and confirmed that Deery played OH her last year (may last two years?) of HS after moving from the middle to the left...and, um, was the 1-A Player of the Year for the state of Iowa in that OH role!! I could not agree more that we need to maximize athleticism in any way we possibly can. In many ways, Deery reminds me of Lauren Brobst. Lauren was also an Iowa native who grew up as a Hawkeye fan. Had outstanding HS career as a middle. Not heavily-D1 recruited. Committed to Iowa to follow her dream of being a Hawkeye. Moved to right-side her Freshman year at Iowa (Dingman's last coaching year) because the team needed her in that role. Shymansky moved her to the left when he came in her Sophomore year because he recognized her heavy arm, physicality, versatility, aggressiveness, ability to terminate and intensely competitive edge...and the team desperately needed that on the left. She ended up being one of Iowa's most effective, terminal go-to OHs. Sound familiar? Just sayin'... Footnote: Lauren is now the coach at her alma mater (Bishop Heelan HS in Sioux City) and has done great things with that history-rich program. And if ( IF) this were to happen, could move Vesty (who also brings much front-row versatility to the table) to the right as a viable option behind Garcia, should she be needed. Ok, my little lounge chair-coaching idea moment is done!

Learned in DI article below that Stojanovic is redshirting this season. Interesting. To me, that tells me that there is confidence in newcomer Gibson to be a viable, effective option along with Davis and Whittingstall, since this now puts us as having just 3 designated middles. I sure would assume if absolutely needed, Vesty could move back into that role, though. Anyway, nice article with some great insight into Aleksandra, her reasoning for coming to Iowa from Serbia, flattering quotes from her roomie Meitzler about her, etc. dailyiowan.com/2024/08/27/iowa-volleyballs-serbian-addition-readies-for-season-start/Excerpt from article in the DI below: "Despite Stojanovic’s redshirt status, head coach Jim Barnes said she has brought a lot to the team. Barnes is entering his third season as Iowa’s head coach.
“She’s a full member of the team, practicing every day and growing,” Barnes said. “All these things are going to help her get ready for next year. She shared about her home life, how it was growing up there, and our team’s all ears and really taking that in. She just brings a lot of heart and drive to our team.”" Good to see some press, although I'm still a little perplexed that they had a media day last Saturday and I have not heard or seen much about it anywhere, other than that one TV story that was shared earlier and a short clip from someone interviewing Davis...not even really anything on the team's social media accounts about/from it that I've seen.

Looks like Iowa has Liberty tomorrow. Liberty has some good returning players. Not an easy match for the Hawks. I’m betting Ammeraal the setter has a triple double within the first 5 matches. She is a beast.

She is a beast. Agree that Liberty will be a good, early test for the Hawks. Here is link to the event website: puertoricocollegesportstours.com/volleyball-2024-detailsNote in the lower right corner it says this: "All matches will be available via livestream. Links will be posted on our home page each day to take you to watch your team." I plan to watch the livestream on mute so I can listen to John Evans on the radio play-by-play! Really appreciate his insight into the team, combined with his knowledge of the sport itself. Top notch, if you ask me. GO HAWKS!

her serve has always plagued her a bit. very mental. if Iowa has a good server somewhere on the bench and y’all aren’t using up too many subs elsewhere, they should look into serve subbing her Wrong not that your first serve determines your season, but this is quite funny now
