North Carolina has already picked up at least 2 good players from the portal. It might be 3 already, with more possibilities still in play. Under the current rules I think every year will be like this at a high percentage of power 4 programs. If you don’t have passing and defense you can’t play volleyball. We picked up wrong players in my view. UNC's 4 primary passers had a combined receive rate of .950. Sure, you may perceptually argue IS/OOS which is not stated publicly, but passing is not UNC's problem. .950 passing + plus up setting + terminators = winning. Might want to focus on the plus up setting and hitting. Volleyball has and always will be an offensive game.....if you want to win.

Probably the UNC coaches have also never learned that. Hopefully they read this thread. You can be condescending that’s your right and light, but please enlighten me why we have played with one libero this past season, and after seeing May play as a freshman and her inability to read the game, and why that’s never been a priority for us?! I don’t blame May btw, she can do what she can do, I blame the coaches for not getting a proper libero to compete with her for the spot after May’s first year wasn’t great.

With the extra Covid year ending, I seriously doubt you see this as a high percentage at Power 4 programs. Maybe the elite ones (i.e. Texas ,Nebraska, etc.), not at UNC. I would want UNC to focus on the future, not a one year one and done. They will have to pay the piper after this year if they load up on Grad Transfers. One could argue that they are paying the piper this year due to grad transfers last year. We’ve been paying the piper for a while

They got broomed off of the court in the finals because of the lack of passing and to some extent defense. That’s what happens at UNC in stretches that killed us for the past two seasons, and Maddie May has been our lib for those two seasons. It certainly would help to have terminal middles, which Swift isn’t, and terminal OHs but our breakdowns were always in passing and defense.

I also can’t wait to see what we do for an open setter spot. I hope the coaches have some vision after losing so many players

Because they couldn’t pass 🙄 Their poor setter tried everything but when you don’t get good passes it’s hard to play against teams like Texas. I felt bad for their setter, who is one of my favorite setters. Texas hit over the block as well so that was another reason why they lost so bad. Even Rodriguez couldn’t cover all that area.

Oddly enough, we have TV in CA. I was able to watch it. A few observations: -Texas and Nebraska arent playing club level volleyball (which I've noticed most of your analysis seems based on). Skinner terminated set 1 at 23-22 with a good ol fashioned (old and slow as I think you call it) 5-ball over a triple block. If you have kid who can touch 11', why set low and fast? - The notion of an OOS attack to a 6-4 athlete is not really an OOS attempt.....so the original pass in todays game is less crucial. 1 and 2 pt passes are often 3 pt attack opportunities because of the athleticism. They're expected to terminate it....or at least put it in a spot that leads to an OOS for the opponent - There was sequence in 2nd set where a bad Neb serve receive actually led to a 3pt attack opportunity the OH squandered with a weak tip....which led to Neb setter making 3 consecutive low, quick sets (2 OH, 1 BRA) that were blocked....one for a pt....but lets blame the bad passing. - Neb setter also played no front row defense - These games are won and lost terminating from a 2-pt passes

But I won’t go into those details as that makes no difference. I felt she tried to attack as well as set fast when she could in general. As much as we would like to have Skinner at UNC we don’t have her. Nor anyone remotely similar. And we also don’t have anyone that can touch 11’ and hit over the block. In those instances you have to play fast and for that you need a good pass. There are plenty of other examples what happens to Skinnerless teams when passing breaks down. Let’s not talk pro volleyball v. what we play at UNC. If you think that Nebraska could have done something with their bad passing, we disagree on that. Of course there are instances of what you describe but in general they could not play IS or OOS on O’Neal’s serve. What they played OOS was defended well by Texas. Hence the lopsided score.

I’ve watched her play club. Not impressed that much. Where is the info that she is one of the best in the country coming from? Maybe she had a bad day when I watched and even if she is one of the best why is UNC not bringing her?! It’s tiring to keep asking the same questions why UNC can’t attract the top local talent, but we bring talented players from elsewhere and can’t keep them. Without a major change in program (coaches) and university support we ain’t going anywhere. You might be the most negative poster there is. Might be. Must be fun to be around.
