Is Avery that good? To be fair, I’ve only seen limited highlights but she didn’t look all that impressive to me. I’ve watched her play club. Not impressed that much. Where is the info that she is one of the best in the country coming from? Maybe she had a bad day when I watched and even if she is one of the best why is UNC not bringing her?! It’s tiring to keep asking the same questions why UNC can’t attract the top local talent, but we bring talented players from elsewhere and can’t keep them. Without a major change in program (coaches) and university support we ain’t going anywhere. Without knowledge, it is easy to question recruiting of local athletes. The setter in question is also a very good beach player. She has played nationally. UNC doesn’t have a beach team but Arizona does. So why waste time trying to recruit her. Most the Triangle kids have traveled the country since they were 13, attending the NTDP, making friends with other top players. These relationships and family/personal might influence their decisions as well. Perhaps playing at UCLA, at Nebraska, at Kentucky or in the Big10 is preferable to staying home in the not so great ACC. Feel free to be snarky, which how you roll when faced with something contrary to your point of view.

Feel free to be snarky, which how you roll when faced with something contrary to your point of view. I do see your points. They are valid. But I disagree that ACC is weak. There are weak schools of course in ACC but that’s no different than any other conference. ACC in my view has good VB. B1G is by far the best. I don’t see much difference between ACC and Big12 though. Power 3 now are pretty even if you ask me after B1G on top. There is no reason why we couldn’t commit our local athletes, but for a crappy program. The coaches we got after 33 years of Joe in my view are subpar for the school we have, academically and athletically. My reasoning is that if our program invested in technology to follow player conditioning (do more conditioning to start with), which we don’t, and would have a much more organized fundamentals training, which we don’t, and would stop protecting certain players, we actually could be amazing. My opinion of the setter for indoor is my opinion. You are certainly entitled to yours. I evaluate technical skill, ball distribution, and defense for a setter. For lib how they SR and read the game.. and for hitters how they place the ball (anyone can hit hard). What do you look for?

But you do end up seeing the ignorance and vitriol when others quote their reply, so it’s not perfect.

I’ve been reading this thread for several years now. Every year it’s the same. Oh, we got good player X and a good player Y, but none of that produced good results. The trigger for me to get involved was how people were talking about Maddie May and her greatness etc etc. We are talking about a competitive volleyball here. Our program ain’t it the way it’s been run for the past few years and especially now. You probably figured out I don’t care much what you all think of my analysis or comments. Call it ignorance or vitriol bvolley17, that’s your take on it but not my intent. What I’m tired of is reading every year about the potential, and then we get good players, and then no results, and then everyone is disappointed, and then those good players leave. It feels like there has to be this positivity here on this thread or you are a disturbance. The first step in getting better is to call out the issues we have. Some of you think that’s negative, and that’s fine. But please look at yourself in the mirror and tell me what have you done to make it better. Did it help all the talk every year about this and that and how we almost had it etc etc?! Sounds cultish to me. bvolley17, you told me in private you emailed Bubba, so did I. Did that change anything?! Nope. I’m done emailing but I will voice it here. I care enough to call it as I see it. I am a competitive former athlete and I don’t like singing kumbaya when we keep loosing and especially when I see fundamental issues in the program at my university.

North Carolina has already picked up at least 2 good players from the portal. It might be 3 already, with more possibilities still in play. Under the current rules I think every year will be like this at a high percentage of power 4 programs. Do we have any ideas as to when they’ll be announcing? I know we have Thorpe, and hearing that Engelbrecht is another. We are the only school Arica Davis (MB, Minny) is following on IG other than Minny. McKenzie Morris (L, KState) follows us and SMU. Personally, even though we have Thorpe already, I’d like to have Yardimci, too. I don’t see us following a setter yet though.

UNC has secured a very good Opposite in Thorpe. Right Side (check)
Rumor is that Peyman Yardimici (Opp) is headed to UNC and that Englebrecht (MB) is also on the way.
UNC also has a very good shot at Delaynee Maple (L) and Arcia Davis (MB). Arcia is from Raliegh and this would put her closer to home.
These would instantly make UNC better upon arriving. However, the key is how they and the team develop. I also hope we are pursuing a setter. Zoe is the hand they are going to go with but we need depth.

Maybe an 18-year old just wanted to be closer to home?

I think the coaching staff knew mid-season that she was homesick and would likely want to be closer to home as soon as she could be. UNC is a huge place with quite a bit of diverse populations, and can be overwhelming for young people if they are not used to it. Sometimes kids just want to be closer to home so they can see their families more regularly.

For what it’s worth I noticed Reese Rhodes (Texas Tech Setter) is following UNC. Idk if it’s an old follow or not but she is in the portal
