Y'all..... this is ridiculous. I could maybe take Hanson (though Colyer had a better hit %/overall stats and Hudson had more kills per set) but overlooking Fuerbringer when Penn State did not have great matches out west (yes, they won, but statistically they were pretty ehhh) and all the other middles (not counting Booth) or even Schumacher's performance just seems like they phoned it in. (Also, they have got to get rid of this "Only award players from teams who win" mindset when it is literally Player of the Week, not Team of the Week!) Just saying we have nebraska this week and PSU next week, we're going to be playing to prove multiple points.

Who votes on these awards? Coaches?

Who votes on these awards? Coaches? Every year you see some jokes about the B1G office being full of interns from [x school]. It's not actually interns voting, right? Like those are joke posts. Right? 😅

Right? 😅It's definitely not coaches! Though they're the ones who submit their players' names for each category, I believe. The coaches do vote for the end of the year All B1G awards IIRC.

Right? 😅It's not at all clear who does the selection. If coaches don't submit nominations, players don't get awards, so whoever is selecting is probably not watching all the matches. They are simply weighing the arguments in the nominations.

I wonder what the submission process is. Just giving a name and some stats? Putting together a highlight reel from the week so there's some visual/eye test to go with numbers? A mini pick-me essay pleading your player's case?
Yes it was at home against unranked Northwestern but Hanson's highlight reel for that match was glorious. Best I've ever seen her play offensively. And then in a reverse sweep against Ohio State she really had to put the team on her back for a lot of it. Maybe reverse sweep on the road carried some weight? There must be some intangibles taken into consideration on top of stats. Maybe Oregon's SID missed the deadline. Who knows. Haven't teams even missed deadlines for All-America stat submissions?

Also why and how did Andi Jackson win the defensive award with 1.6 bps on the weekend?? Seems rather ridiculous if the awards are given based on stats. These players all had higher bps than AndI Caroline Crawford - 1.7 bps Carter Booth - 3.0 bps Lourdes Myers - 1.8 bps Natalie Robinson (FRESHMAN) - 1.9 bps I was ready to riot about Robinson being robbed until I saw that hitting percentage 😭 I get it’s DPOW but oof girl

I know advanced stats aren't really reasonable for scorekeepers to track but counting block touches, and rating block touches and digs by whether they result in a hitting attempt, free ball or overpass/covered block may be?

Could be - but Smrek had 2.0 bps for the weekend with a win at Purdue (not even counting her offensive numbers for the weekend which were pretty good - noting this is a defensive award) That's for explaining it was a defensive award. /S I truly didn't know if players had to play both matches to be eligible since Booth seemed like an obvious choice. Can someone explain why someone like Smrek who has 2.0bps wouldn’t get the award over Jackson? I struggle to understand is this stats based or is based on who the coaches submit? Because if it’s the latter these awards start to mean less and less imo..

Sheff had a lot of options but my guess is he went with either Crawford (who had two great blocking matches) or Schumacher who had fantastic dig numbers.

Not sure if you've checked out evollve.net yet, but it has some more nitty gritty stats that aren't in box scores that are kind of fun to look at. Stuff like player hitting % in back row vs front row. Team hitting % off player X's serve receptions. Point win % after player X's dig. Etc etc. Doesn't have any extra block touch stats though womp womp
