Agreed. It's just hard to leave an outside in who is struggling because they have so many responsibilities. They need to receive full time as well unless you have an opposite that can handle service reception duties. Some nights "taking lumps" might mean making unforced hitting errors/service errors or it can mean being in the shank tank on serve receive. That is tough to just leave it and let happen especially since there are two spots platooned by 3-4 athletes. Louis is inconsistent on all fronts. If he shores up these skills, he becomes a player that is on par with someone like Spyros. All that aside, I was very impressed with Louis. He has all the tools and is potential star in the making. He is inconsistent because he isn't given ample opportunity to play in these high pressure type of matches because he has to sit behind Thiim. Thiim is out there mostly for his serve and his Charlie's preferred pick. Thiim making multiple bone headed errors too but he the upper classman here. What is Thiims excuse and why is he allowed to let that slide many a time? Sakanoko is the bright spot and future and my only point is that I hope Charlie at least gives the young man a second look at starting. He not going learn and grow by watching from the bench. Sakanoko is inconsistent because he's just inconsistent lol. Playing more doesn't guarantee that a player gets better. It could also create situations of low morale with the individual and the team. Also, we are missing an important piece which is that we both don't know Louis, his personality and how much pressure he can take on a regular basis. Some players flourish when coming off the bench. It's actually less pressure in most situations. Keoni had a valiant effort tonight but yes, it was difficult to watch some of the errors. Keoni also 6'0" tall (that is probably generous) so we're actually not comparing apples to apples with the two athletes. I think Charlie will give Louis a hard and favorable look. I also think that if Keoni goes double digit errors next time without the volume of kills that he produced tonight won't sit well with Charlie. To close, I don't necessarily disagree with you. I'm just offering what I think are some realistic counterpoints as to why Charlie may not elect to leave Sakanoko in all the time. Of course, I actually don't know and this is speculation.

Oh yes definitely I know we agree. I just am hoping they can help Louis tap into the endless possibilities we all see for him. But also, I recognize my opinion on here means not a damn thing to the coaching staff! Lmfao

I missed the rest of the match after set 4 but I'm happy that Hawaii kept fighting. We can only go up from here, and I can't wait to see how we progress the rest of the season 🙂

I do think it's a little different with the outside hitter position vs the setter position. I think that all 3 men have staked their claim to the two slots and I think that battling it out enhances that position as well. If the spot is just given to one of them, then the others lose out on the ability to compete for it and the starter may not work as hard. I do think that Chaz is in an interesting position being that this is his final season and as banged up as he is but being the most experienced out of the trio. That may issue may influence Charlie's decision. I get it but looking at the future.....Sakanoko has the most upside between all of them. Chaz gone next season and Thiim's height is a huge liability. Thiim is Charlie's preferred option because of his serve alone. We all know it which is why Sakanoko will be the one off the bench unless Chaz is injured. I say give Sakanoko a chance. If Thiim’s shot selection wasn’t so poor for an undersized outside, I don’t think it would be as close between him and Sakanoko. If Keoni passes like he has been, I say keep him in and focus on setting Voss & Todd more. Let Louis come in when anyone is having a bad offensive night, but he’s gotta show he can be those offensive AND serviceable in the backrow to win the start outright.

A few more thoughts:
1. When Louis first came, he didn't seem like a leaper but he seems to be jumping very well now.
2. If he takes it this way, I think going up against a middle like Torwie could be good for Kurt. He met someone that he had very little chance against. I hope that Kurt continues to improve as the season goes but I also hope that he ramps up his overall fitness in the off season, especially with G leaving.
3. Louis showed some great middle back defense. His reading, coupled with his speed and range makes for an intriguing defender. He also scoops many point blank swings up! I don't know how men do it but the scoop has to be one of my favorite things about men's volleyball
4. Knipe got better

Hawaii is a work-in-progress without Chakas and with Chaz nursing an ankle, and a freshman setter sometimes looking the part. But in the most difficult place for them to play, against what I consider the #1 team, they found they could compete. They found their footing and came within a couple of points, a couple less errors of winning. Hawaii is still in the hunt, still capable of achieving their goals. Some tweaks, some completely doable improvements, they'll be playing at an even higher level.
