A wide variance between NCAA Adj. RPI and Massey. IIRC Massey weighs set results. Under Massey, losing in max sets is penalized less than losing in three sets, and wins in three sets are credited more than wins in five sets. While RPI doesn't look at sets and only weighs W/L end results, with Adj. RPI usually only moving things around marginally. It's also interesting to look at the NCAA Final 'Opponent SoS' rankings for 2023: - Kentucky: 1 - Stanford: 2 . - Texas: 12 - Nebraska: 14 . . - Hawai'i: 89 - UCSB: 112 - Beach: 121 - UC Davis: 147 - Cal Poly: 149 - UC Irvine: 160 I like the different weight of winning/losing in 5 sets which is a 'close to an even' match. I think the FIVB model? where 3/4 set wins give 3 points to winner, 0 to loser, and 5 set matches give 2 points to winner, 1 point to loser

I may do a conference/team preview and my prediction thoughts but we’ll see if I’m free to finish it.

Interesting that on the all-conference pre-season team, only 1 player that is actually from California.

A lot of Hawaii fans have been crying that their team was going to be mid pack but I guess others disagree lol.

I hope CSUF is improved from this prediction and somehow finds their way into the 8th spot from tied for last. I think they have a realistic shot at that. I am praying for the improvement because I think with time their coaching staff can make some significant gains. I really like head coach Nicole.

A lot of Hawaii fans have been crying that their team was going to be mid pack but I guess others disagree lol. I still believe Hawaii should be either 3 or 4 behind Cal Poly and LBSU. They have so many new and young players, it is not funny. Not to mention, almost no backup behind the starters. If any of the starters, especially when it come to the Outside/Opposite Hitters, get injured, and are out for any length of time, the Hawaii team is in Serious Trouble.

The Wahine Team is only picked 2nd, due to their reputation, NOT due to the talent they have on the team.

Fullerton is much improved, be warned.
Fullerton lineup: 1 freshman, 9 sophomores, 3 juniors, and 2 seniors.

It's Hawaii for me until someone knocks them off the top of the conference. Overall all, I'd like to see the top teams in the Big West have strong seasons and for the bottom to improve. GO BOWS! SB did just that last year Hawaii still won the auto bid and the conference tournament. Not knocking the other Big West teams at all. SB has been getting the best of Hawaii for what seems like 5+ years in a row now and the Beach continues to get better along with Cal Poly. But Hawaii has been on or near the top when it's mattered every season. I expect more of the same.

Mr truth, why do you say, "No they are not." I know these players, they have been working too improve. They will soon start the quest to show all of you how they have improved. veritas who are you for?

Interesting that on the all-conference pre-season team, only 1 player that is actually from California. That is interesting because most would think the BW recruits heavily from California but I guess their better players are from out of state. Beshear is a beast and from right here in SoCal so that theory doesn’t hold up. Sure Big West recruits heavily from CA bc most in the conference are state schools where the cost to give scholarships to in state players is a fraction of that for out of state players. But I think there’s plenty of talent to pull from CA so it’s not like sloppy seconds as you make it sound. On the other hand I think quite a few schools on the east coast particularly in the Big East where volleyball traditionally hasn’t been as big but are now trying to grow these programs view grabbing a CA (or Hawaii) commit as a bit of a trophy bc of the strength and history of the western regions. It mirrors the strength of the USAV regions when you go to Nationals. Very few top club teams coming out of New England or Garden Empire but conversely those regions are chock full of prestigious schools.
