I think to level-set the expectations for this team is that they make the NCAAs. I think they can do it and hopefully by the end of the season can pull it together enough to make their own regional. They will probably have to go on the road to play a seeded team to do that however! They COULD get to be a formidable team. They could also go the other direction. Confidence is going to be key. They need to stick with Wilhite and Rosado, however, I think. Maybe Schau, too, although they may think they can use both setters effectively. I'd like to see one of them really grab the position, however. If Rosado picks it up, they have flexibility with Goehner, too -- although I like Goehner as a libero. I'd like to see Paige on the rightside and Lohman in the middle -- at least as an option. But that means taking a huge risk. Plus Nora CAN be effective if they are in-system and the OHs are scoring. More than effective. She can be a weapon.

Thank God for Daly. We can say what we want about her shot selection, hitting percentages, serve receive, etc., but I really think that she is a good portion of the reason that these sets were so close. I understand that she played injured (?), but she still did not let down much. Anyone who has seen her play up close recently can attest to the leadership and spirit that she brings even when things are slipping. Not trying to take a shot at anyone else on the team in particular, just something that I often notice and am very pleased with. Her coaches must be proud.

Goehner played well, however. Right? I think Wilhite, Santana, Goehner and Rosado give us a shot at being solid on defense. Schau isn't bad either. Plus it helps to play behind a solid block. Still think this team has potential to be good. Better than tonight, for sure. Northwestern match is big. No to Wilhite, no to Santana, and a definite no to Rosado. They are pretty weak in the back row. Best case scenario, Hannah and Paige continue their tear at the net, and Goehner can anchor down the back row while Daly/Wilhite can try to at least be serviceable back there. Disagree. Whatever. It's funny, however. YOU were the one telling us how great Rosado was. She's better than she's been playing.

Ill-Ini, nice sweep! Just trying to break up the Golpher talk. Congrats on the win! McMahon, Birks, and Donnelly really impressed me tonight. Not surprising in the least bit from what I heard before this match.

Goehner is the only one who I feel comfortable with in the back row right now, and that's a problem.

You play her because you know that's the way to success. Same deal with Wilhite. They NEED those two to be good. If they aren't, things get much much tougher.

Paige was amazing tonight, I laughed when someone last week said something about Dixon leaves and now there is Paige Tapp. Tonight's the first I've seen her, and that block then dig at the end shows just how much heart she has in her game.
NW lost in three, but scored 20 and 23; GOPHER's go from a nearly must win to a must win so there is no time to lick any wounds.

Reading this thread makes me both laugh and cry. I watched the match on TV and did not read the thread until the match was over. Yes we lost, but it certainly wasn't for lack of effort. We played a top 20 team on the road in a tough environment and certainly could've/should've won sets 1 and 2. I laugh because the critical comments and judgments are ridiculous. Everyone is an expert, know more than a gold medal winning coach and all make it sound so easy to do i'm sure all of you have played and excelled at D-1 volleyball in your playing days. I cry because these kids are playing their hearts out and still overall are a young and developing team. I don't care whay anyone says, they lost a lot of talent from last years team.I'm with Ruffda, chill out and give this team a chance to develop. Has anyone thought that maybe, just maybe Illinois is better than Minnesota right now. Believe it or not, that does happen occasionally when a team isn't quite as talented. By the end of the season that may change. I'm not saying you have to be happy with a loss, just be somewhat objective and realistic. I happen to think that wnen the smoke clears they will be in the top 1/2 of the conference and in the NCAA tourney. Go Gophers.

Well hopefully Illinois can carry this momentum and give PSU a match.

So nobody is allowed to be critical?
Sulu, which critical comments do you find "ridiculous"?

Everything isn't rainbows and sunshine with the Gophers right now, so let's not pretend like it. And who says you have to be an "expert" to comment on this stuff? Is this site now exclusive to ex D1-players and coaches? You're flipping out for no reason. I love the Gophers. But they are very mediocre, and don't have the proper pieces to be the team that we are all used to in recent years. As a fan, there's no reason I can't gripe about the job Hugh's done, along with the team and the level they are at. Do I expect something substantially more out of them? No. But there's no reason why we can't be mad after a performance like this, where this team clearly could've have achieved a better result in tonight's match.

Actually judging by some of the ex D1 players they get to do color commentary, I'm not sure they always sound like experts either.
