Not completely accurate. Any player on a sand scholarship who plays indoor will count against the indoor scholarship limit. After a player has been on a sand scholarship for two seasons, they are eligible to be switched over to an indoor scholarship. However, if they remain on a sand scholarship their junior/senior years, it still counts against the indoor limit. The idea is to keep schools from essentially having up to 18 indoor players on scholarship. Which is exactly what Nina had the ability to do when she was running the show at Pep... Name one sand schollied player at Pepp who ever moved over to indoor. OK, I'll save you the trouble - it's never happened.

The fact that she was over both programs allowed her certain recruiting privileges that other autonomous programs don't have, access to 12 indoor scholies add to that however many Sand scholies...i don't believe the offer the full 6 cholarships. She did it in the reverse for setting herself up for exactly what has transpired at Pep. The gutting of the indoor and its ultimate demise over the past four years for the success of the sand team. Where is there indoor program alla Oral Roberts? Anyways this is a beach volleyball board so sticking to the topic, yes, no Pep sand athlete has gone indoor....master of the obvious if you follow the sport.

How many Pep athletes went from dual indoor sand to sand only this year?

I don't think there's really much to support what you're saying, though. Pepperdine's sand success has been largely due to indoor-first players (Hill, Frederick, Robinson, Adelhelm, Larsen, Woolever, Christaansen, etc - most of whom were recruited before sand volleyball had been approved as an emerging sport) augmented by two really good sand-only players (Ross, Dykstra), and a couple of two-way transfers who were/are really good at both (Orozco, Strehlow). Very few two-way players have been recruited in the past three-four years - there's one 2015 (offered by Nina before she gave up indoor) that caused a mild eyebrow-raise, but that's about it. As for the current roster, T. Racich went sand-only last season (at her request), which opened up an indoor schollie for Okoro (or was it Brown?). Larsen wasn't going to play indoor and is only sticking around for a 5th year to play beach, Woolever doesn't have any indoor eligibility left, and Cook I don't know...is she on a scholarship? Pepperdine's indoor problems the past two seasons have more to do with the inability to replace what might have been the best core of players the program ever had from that really good 2011 team, injuries to players like Orozco and Cash, and multiple transfers out of the school. Some of that can probably be laid at the feet of Nina, but as for the indoor team being "gutted" at the expense of sand? Nah, not seeing it.

If Nina was really stacking the indoor roster with sand players, you'd think the indoor team would pass better.

Changing the venue a little, probably the top recruit for playing both Indoor and Sand coming in this year is Sarah Sponcil at LMU. She was positioned to be setting indoors but was so good she started at the OH position and helped in getting LMU into the playoffs. She figures to be a big factor on the Sand this year as well.

Really, really good beach player. No doubt. Last I heard (which was awhile back), Sponcil and Metter were playing together - Sponcil's a good blocker for her height - but Tom could split them up to give the team more depth in dual matches. He's got some bigs with Keil, Suaava, Kevorken, Taylor to work with. I don't know if LMU has enough depth to make a lot of noise, but Metter and Sponcil are both all-american level players (IMO).

Breaking up Metter and Keil who made the semis in Alabama last year (i.e. All Americas) and have played together for the past two years is a decision that I am glad I do not have to make....

Does LMU have an underclassman that can hang in the top flights and partner up with Sponcil? If say, Kevorken and Sponcil could be a legit #2 team, then that keeps Keil and Metter together AND gives Sponcil someone to team with for the next 3 years.
It'll be interesting to see how team composition gets worked out between all the different schools. Teams with split squads will have sand only teams playing together for months and then get shuffled around when indoor kids become available in January, so there's yet another factor to figure in for pairs.

I don't think it's a hard decision at all, Metter and Keil were average most of last season, if LMU wants a chance to win the pairs title, Metter and Sponcil is the way to go.

Of the top five rated schools, any of the others have their #1 pairs returning in-tack? Whoever she is with, I am looking forward to seeing Sponcil playing on the beach.

Dykstra-Strehlow is the only one I can think of. But the question is, who can knock off Hughes-Claes? Last season, I saw Walsh-Ross get swept off the court by a Swiss team ranked twenty-plus places lower than Kerri and April, so on any given day blah, blah. That said, Dykstra-Strehlow are probably the only realistic contenders to beat Hughes-Claes. IMO.
