I listened to a portion of the BYU game. It seemed like BYU had an excellent scouting report and exposed the flaws in Purdue. Coach Shondell said that it was a winnable game, but BYU was just the better team. I really wished that Purdue would have won against all of their opponents, but hopefully they will just get better and better. They really bounced back with the win against SLU. I was listening to the commentators on the radio and they said that no matter win or lose, this game will be good for Purdue's RPI. How can it still be good for Purdue even when they lost the game?It cannot - it is a poor statement. Losing to a good team is rarely better than not playing the game. However, if the opponent ends up with a really good record - there may be a very little difference between losing and not playing the match. For Purdue - losing to BYU was a small net negative compared to not playing them. Winning would have obviously been helpful.
One of the ways were RPI really gets in trouble - there are several matches where a team is better off not playing the game (the opponent) even when winning the match.

"RPI is made up of three components: 25 percent comes from a team's own winning percentage, 50 percent from its opponents' winning percentage, and 25 percent from of its opponents' opponents' winning percentage. " Losing to a really good opponent is worth more than winning against a poor opponent. But, you have to have a minimum .500 record to make the NCAA Tournament. You have to have enough wins to cover your possible losses once you hit the Big Ten part of the schedule. Thanks for letting me know how the RPI is determined. Thanks for the other comments as well.

Looking for good results this weekend against LSU and Miami. We can't afford losses with the SOS being low again this year.

I really wished that Purdue could have added two more to the win column this weekend. Miami played really well in the end of the 5th set though. Hopefully they will just get better and better as the season progresses. Drews had good stats, but I was surprised that no one else on the team reached double digit kills in the Miami game. Drews is a beast, but I wouldn't want her to be burned out later.

After I thought about it....Purdue had multiple people earn kills. Maybe they have enough good hitters that they can just spread it out and let it fly.

"WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- More than 6,200 fans packed into Mackey Arena to see the No. 22 Boilermakers battle Notre Dame on Saturday night and they were treated to a lights-out performance by senior Annie Drews as Purdue beat the Irish 3-1 to claim the Boiler Box Challenge title. The Boilermakers won the match 25-12, 24-26, 28-26, 25-16.
Drews racked up 29 kills on 64 swings, while hitting at a .312 clip, and registering her 1,000th career kill late in Set 2 to become the 25th Boilermaker player to reach the milestone and the first since Ariel Turner (2009-12). Seven other players tallied a kill in the match, including sophomore Danielle Cuttino (9), sophomore Lydia Dimke (6), sophomore Azariah Stahl (5) and redshirt senior Kaisley Fisher (5).
Defensively, senior Amanda Neill paced the backcourt with 23 digs to go with her six assists and an ace. Redshirt sophomore setter Ashley Evans added 18 digs to go with 50 assists, four kills and two blocks. Freshmen Brooke Peters and Alexa Smith tallied 10 digs apiece. At the net, Cuttino put up a team-leading five stuffs. Smith and senior Kate Workman each served up two of Purdue's six aces.
...
Neill was named tournament MVP for her efforts, while Drews and Dimke earned all-tournament team honors alongside Sam Fry (Notre Dame), Kelly Hopkins (Ball State) and Sydney Dimke and Kelsey Biltoft (South Dakota)."

Purdue has depth at every position, this year. It was great to see Kaisley get to play. Faye was medically unavailable ( concussion? ) and she had been getting lights out numbers in hitting percentage. So, i was a little nervous not even seeing her on the sidelines. But, Kaisley did great! Ashley did a good job setting the middles considering Danielle hits in the stratosphere vs "only" 6'3" Kaisley. Ashley dug so many first balls, it seemed like the strategy was to not let her set. Amanda was up to the task, setting almost every ball Ashley popped up. The back row is shaping up to be so good this year! Impressed with Amanda, Kate, Brooke, Alexa and Carrissa.
There are now definitely 4 OH hitters in the rotation, with Lydia having a great weekend.
And Annie was lights out vs. Notre Dame.
So happy she got her 1,000th kill!

I didn't watch this past weekend's matches, only followed them so forgive me if some of this is naive. But is this a concern with too heavy of a reliance on Drews' arm and with Lydia hitting outside? As previously stated, that's 4 OH hitters which really means no one person is getting it done. I still don't think the middles are being set enough and with the main/only weapon being Drews, we won't be too hard to scout. Am I crazy?

Having to scout the hitting patterns of 4 different OH's seems to add some difficulty to scouting, I would think.
Everyone knows Annie is our big weapon, and are going to concentrate on blocking her. Having her hit out of the back row makes it harder to block her.
Yes, our middles are really good, and should get set a lot. Faye has the best hitting percentage on the team. But, Faye was out, and we still won!

-23, -19, -18 After a great set 1 battle, Purdue really handled them well. A really nice win on the road. Purdue needed that.
