Purdue won the match 25-22, 25-14, 25-18 to maintain possession of the Spike for the eighth straight season. Senior Annie Drews led the offense with 13 kills, while hitting at a team-best .462 clip and adding eight digs and three blocks. Sophomore Danielle Cuttino managed 10 kills, hitting .429, to go with three blocks. Freshman Alexa Smith added eight kills, while redshirt junior Faye Adelaja put down seven and sophomore Azariah Stahl registered four. Adelaja put up a team-leading four blocks as Purdue outblocked Indiana 7-3. Defensively, redshirt sophomore setter Ashley Evans led the way with 10 digs to go with her 28 assists and two blocks. Drews followed with eight, while freshman Brooke Peters and Smith added seven apiece and senior Amanda Neill managed six. Purdue hit at a .340 clip for the match, while holding Indiana to a .124 effort. Purdue jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in Set 1 and led 11-8 before Indiana mounted a comeback. The Hoosier managed seven of the next nine points to go ahead 15-13. The Boilermakers tied it at 15-15 on back-to-back kills by Adelaja. Kills by Adelaja and Cuttino and a Hoosier service error knotted the score at 18. The Boilermakers closed out the set with a 8-4 run. The Boilermakers were up three at 22-19 and again at 23-20 after kills by Drews. The Hoosiers cut the margin to one at 23-22 prompting a Purdue timeout. A kill by Drews put Purdue on the hill and an IU hitting error ended the set. Drews had six kills, while Adelaja added five and Cuttino turned in four as the Boilermakers hit at a .351 clip. The Boilermakers led Set 2 from start to finish, piling up six blocks and leading by as many as 11 en route to a 25-14 win. Purdue scored seven of the first 10 points including four stuffs, prompting an Indiana timeout. The Hoosiers scored the first point out of the break, but the Boilermakers racked up eight of the next 11 to boost the lead to 15-7 and force another IU timeout. Kills by Drews, Evans and Adelaja and a couple of Indiana miscues aided the effort. The Hoosiers cut the margin to six at 16-10, but the Boilermakers answered with six of the next seven points to pull away. A pair of kills by Smith put Purdue on the precipice at 24-13, while a putaway by Stahl sealed the win. Purdue hit .400 in the set, while holding the Hoosiers to a -.075 percentage. The Boilermakers finished off the sweep with a 25-18 win in Set 3. Four different players tallied two or more kills in the stanza as Purdue hit .306 and allowed the Hoosiers just a .054 effort. The Boilermakers went up 7-2 early with help from four Hoosier miscues and two kills by Smith. Indiana cut the margin to two at 8-6, but Purdue maintained control, going up five at 13-8 as Cuttino pounded down three kills. The Hoosiers were within one at 15-14 after scoring six of the next eight, including two aces. The Boilermakers rallied to a four-point edge at 19-15 as Smith added two kills and an ace, forcing an IU timeout. A stuff by Adelaja and Evans kicked off a 4-0 Boilermaker run, which also featured kills by Cuttino and Stahl and an ace by Adelaja. A Hoosier block slowed Purdue for a moment, but a hitting error set up the final kill by Drews. Purdue (14-2, 5-0 Big Ten) returns to action at 8 p.m. ET Saturday in a rematch with the Hoosiers. The match is sold out. Any tickets that become available will be up for purchase in the Athletics Ticket office beginning at 7 p.m. www.purduesports.com/sports/w-volley/recaps/100715aab.html[ This is why these matches should be played in Mackey. 200 yards away (if that far) is a 14k fan capacity arena. Absolutely no reason this is a sellout @ around 3000 attendees when 14k arena is so very close. Makes absolutely no sense. None!! It makes a ton of sense. Lets say they get a 1000 more at Mackey which is a big jump, now you are in big arena with a totally different fan environment and far easier place for opponents to play in. There is a reason Nebraska was hesitant to move to Devaney, and they knew they would get thousands more if not double. PSU isnt doubling or even close and lose the great atmosphere they have. Makes perfect sense. If they get 2000 people on a waiting list at least, than it might make sense.

If you asked coaches if they wanted to move, they would say no way.

This will be the first big game that the team will be playing in since playing at Michigan/MSU...I hope that Purdue does great and that they play with as much confidence as they have been exuding for two weeks. BOILER UP! I wonder if Coach Shondell will continue playing his Freshman or go with experience this weekend. Smith has been doing well...but is she ready for a game against the likes of OSU and PSU?

Man, this thread has been quiet for a while, so I figured I'd bring it back. How do we feel about: 1. The ups and downs of the team aka the inconsistency? 2. The outside hitting Great win vs. Illinois, shoulda probably been over in 3 but a W is a W. I think that the inconsistency and streakiness of play is frustrating. At times Purdue looks unstoppable...and within the same night they can look confused and sloppy. I am not an expert or savvy in volleyball, so I don't know if it's the other team playing better or if it's Purdue shooting themselves in the foot or a mixture of both. It's getting towards the end of the season and it would be nice to see Purdue gel more and really put teams away...not let the other team get in a groove and steal a win. I am impressed with how the team came back from the dead against Illinois. It brought me back to the days with Ariel Turner and how we fought back and could win in the 5th set. This was our third one this year I think, and we finally won one. Purdue showed a lot of resiliency and stamina to win. I also liked that multiple players stepped up to the plate and showed just how much fire power Purdue has besides Drews. Drews will try to do it all on her own, but Purdue needs everyone to show up to have a chance against Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. I am really surprised that Coach Shondell isn't using Peters anymore. I thought that the matches that she has been playing in, she has been very steady and stable for Purdue. I think that she can be of a lot more use than just a serving specialist.

Sometimes its Peters, sometimes Workman, sometimes Alexa Smith... Also seems that he's trusting Epenesa to pass in serve receive more. Its the double edged sword with having such a deep team. Also seems to me that Drews is either unstoppable or hitting negative. Or is that just me?

I agree with what you're saying about the shuffling of DS players. I wonder if Coach Shondell has found his perfect combination yet or if he will continue to shuffle players around each night. I was happy to see that Rorhsen saw playing time against Illinois. I cannot wait to see how Purdue will do against Wisconsin. I am glad that they will also be playing at Purdue for the final game of th season. Purdue has been playing well at home. Completely off topic...but how do you feel about the random Wednesday/Sunday games? I liked it more when every team in the Big 10 played Friday/Saturday and just had to tough it out week in and week out. A few days rest seems to make a big difference and it may have been in Purdue's interest to play PSU and OSU like that... I guess I am saying that I wish the Big Ten was more uniform...make everyone either play Friday/Saturday or play Wednesday/Saturday.

Forgot to comment on Drews... She has been more unstoppable than hitting negative this year. Thankfully for Purdue, Stahl, Cuttino, and Adelaja have been stepping up when Drews isn't getting her 20 plus kills on a given night. I think that Stahl and Cuttini have made huge strides from where they were a year ago. I have always been a fan of Adelaja and she has been rock solid. The future is bright for Purdue.

Anyone else seem to think our OHs need to step it up? Last night they were a total non-factor. It started out with the passing, of course, but I'm not really sure what the benefit is of having Epenesa play 6 rotations when she is such a liability backrow. I didn't see her attack back there and they were serving her ALOT.
Boilers REALLY NEED to get production from the OHs to balance and for OOS plays.
Drews had an OK performance last night and the middles did well offensively.
Is Smith still not cleared to play a full 6 rotations? Are they still playing it safe w/ her shoulder? We need to try having her 6 rotations, and then have Stahl/Epenesa battle it out for the other OH spot, and have Peters or Workman go in for them in back.
Thoughts?
