Well, I know that. It was a "joke" referring to that baseball game in Oakland. Actually, I thought the woman deserved what she got, although the target was probably her husband. I must have missed those highlights. I believe it. When Fox Sports or ESPN televise a college soccer match, it seems there's hardly anyone there.

Not really, I may post alot of BS on the board but I have never singled out individual VB players for heckling, nor have I ever insulted females in a questionable manner (except for bad decisions made in addressing Islandgirl). I wasn't really talking about your posts, just wondering if you're saying it's okay to heckle males but not females. I might agree, but I think this discussion was originally about heckling in general.

Funny you bring this up. Did you happen to catch that incident with Milton Bradley of the LA Dodgers? I didn't bring it up. Mumsie did. I was being sarcastic you moron. I don't advocate players retaliating. They shouldn't have carte blanche (get it now?) anymore than the fans should.

For advocates of sportsmanship and decency, you folks are throwing an awful lot of personal attacks my way. Let's see, we've got
1) Buchwald suggesting I try being decent.
When was I being indecent?
2) SOBB calling me a dumbass and "laughing at" me
3) LuckyVB calling me a moron
You people having a bad day at the office or something?

Having seen a LONG FREE time out for an injured player who was than allowed to continuing playing the rest of the game (rules said she had to removed from the game, not the match). I heckled the officials, her coach, and her. Everyone knew the rules, the game was close and this was the star.
I enjoy the antics of some coaches – if they leave the bench to yell or complain I believe they are open to heckling. Brain is my favorite to heckle his antics are an awesome show.

"Why? What's wrong with singling out a talented player and trying to rattle him/her? It may not be nice, but so what? " As far as I am concerned, decent people generally try to be nice.

Let's not get this post out of control here. This is about heckling in the stands and more importantly actions of fans during the game rather than what happens on this board. UCSB, I understand that when officials, players or coaches are bending or abusing the rules. You let them know. I still wouldn't start a stream of profanity but if they don't know or follow the rules, the fans should let them know. But there are fans who are simply there to cause chaos. Targeting people not according to their performance or behavior during the game but because of their talent, hype or even personal life. People can do it, it's a free country. I don't like it and I don't do it. It's a personal choice, it ain't illegal. I could even say there are some die hard fans I know who will do it on occasion. that's their choice. Then, there are those who are not restrained by the etiquette of fandom and who know little or care little about the game other than their team is losing. They aren't doing it because they put good money on the ticket and are trying to support them team as 7th woman probably does. They are doing it to be a nuisance, to lash out at others. Volleyball is not an anger management exercise!!!

Well said, for someone who probably has never seen the forest through the trees! Is that a malapropism or just a semi-mangled metaphor? I somehow thought that if I didn't argue with 7th about the heckling at volleyball matches this year that the thread would die quickly. Its a good thing I rarely try that thinking stuff.

I respectfully beg to differ mumsie...
Although definitely not to the extent of a soccer match, people always b*!ch and moan about calls in the Pyramid... There are some real bad refs out there...
We definitely let 'em hear it!
GO BEACH!!!

So folks, being one that has been all in the range from a fairly bad heckler to a very supportive fan (for both teams), I'd be interested in hearing how you would break out certain comments/heckling actions and rate them.
To get started, what do you think about these actions?
"YOU SUCK!" during the serve. (Or whatever very loud from the stands just as the server is contacting the ball?)
"Hey hot stuff, wanna date with a real man?" during a quiet time when you're close to the opponent.
Overly cheering and being oversupportive for a particular player anytime they get the ball (opponent).
Being distracting but not directed towards the player in any way, example WSU fans doing the monkey dance during the opponent's serve.
Being distracting and doing fun group activities, like the wave, or the Bowzo's rowing their canoes during timeouts.
Noise making, such as barnyard animals, etc. as a distraction technique.
Yelling "I got it" very loud as a player is about to make a confused free ball play.
Just curious as to your takes, I think I put in a good mix.

Yeah, lots of bad calls to complain about in volleyball, some minor some major. But in soccer, holy moly. I used to play a lot of soccer and it astonishes me why we even have refs sometimes. Other than to keep the players from fighting each other and deciding handballs(they don't do a good job), refs really don't control the game for the better.
