Wisconsin will be a formidable foe. Looking forward to a great B1G matchup. me too, hope both teams play well.

Passing has actually been a strength compared to previous two years. Where is your proof of this? In ma eyeballs! Just like everyone else, i don't have passing stats or the time to score them myself, but I don't think we passed well for large periods the last two years. Carlini bailed us out a lot. I do believe Sheff has intimated the same thing. He often came out after matches and said they need to pass better over the previous two years. This year he mentions it as a strength with some notable exceptions during matches.

Penn St. has dropped sets against Michigan St., Ohio St., Iowa, and Purdue (and of course, was swept by Nebraska).
PSU 3-2, one set to the Badgers because Wisconsin is good and another because PSU doesn’t deliver.

Very, very flawed statistical analysis here. It's not a statistical analysis. It's math with player statistics - I'm not drawing inference, I'm playing scenarios with assumptions to address a question. You can question the assumptions (like the 0.250 target HP, the middle HP), but I've stated them explicitly, and you can change them. Given those, the math is straightforward. And I'm not making a prediction, only one point: the idea that the pins have to be "great" is oversold, as it is always oversold after the pins have bad matches, or great matches. The pin attack is just part of the picture. With a really great middle attack, there has to be some success on the pins, but not a lot. Bates will get hers, she's been consistent. Gillis has been all over the map. If Gillis has an abysmal night, as she has twice against Minnesota, it's a problem. But if she hits over 0.200 as against Nebraska and MSU recently, that is enough for the badgers to win in four or five. Both scenarios are emminently possible with Gillis. I don't know about Duello.

As I stated, where Wisconsin falls down is not keeping the level of play they show in the first set through the next 3-4. The fact that they routinely win the first set, with or without good pin play, is a good sign, but the downward trend thereafter is disheartening to fans whose hopes were buoyed by the early success. Seems like something one could fix, but I guess that depends on the root cause. My sense is that the passing just erodes and becomes spotty, and the serving gets tentative.

When Nebraska played PSU and their (5'11?) OH had about 20 efficient kills in 3 sets, a lot of it was with tooling. When PSU just played Purdue, their block vs the OH was ON POINT. Serving also great, and defense was hugely improved from earlier matches i'd seen. Taking what I've seen of Wisconsin, if there is a large, well formed double block vs the OH's on mediocre passes, they will struggle. And I think PSU worked on that a lot after NEB exploited it mercilessly.
I expect a PSU win in 4, or maybe 3. I think they've turned over a new leaf with defense/block improving. So I think they will contain WI in the worst sideout rotations more than WI can consistently contain PSU's worst sideout rotations. WI isn't a particularly tough serving team either, which will make it tough to beat teams that have greater physicality. I'm not sure trusting block/defense and serving medium difficulty is a winning plan vs PSU and more physical teams. So I'll have my eye on WI serving to see if they go more aggressive than usual, or turn it up at some point.
I'm also interested to see WI setting and ability to partially neutralize the block that PSU (and others) undoubtedly want to phonebooth WI OH's with on any mediocre pass. And those 32's/rip sets that Wisconsin runs with OH's coming in.. How effective will those be? I think you can roll the dice on how Duello will score vs Lee/Franti + defense.
In my opinion the best way to score vs PSU is great setting, so we will see what Wisconsin has cooked up to neutralize those potentially huge blocks. And how is PSU going to try to burn the perennial freshmen of the week's lateral movement. Cannot wait see it all go down.

And lastly I want to see what shots the WI OH's are going for out of system, if they are good shots to go for vs PSU, and if they are being executed.

Just saw the dignittanylions ProBoards forum! Wow, no wonder PSU posters hardly post on Volleytalk anymore. I love how the creators of your forum pay to remove the ads. I wonder if the mods for Volleytalk can’t afford the $5.99/mo. There are pages and pages of great analysis, insights, and lack of trolling from the typical PSU trolls on this website, and it seems like a wonderful online resource for your fans, players, and recruits. I kind of want to start a ProBoards forum dedicated to Minnesota volleyball today! We’re a growing bunch, and we would likely have more meaningful conversations without the bullying and sidetracking so prevalent on Volleytalk! Does that mean you wouldn't miss us?
