www.redandblack.com/2010/11/01/georgia-fires-volleyball-coach-mccartney-after-four-seasons/Georgia fires volleyball coach McCartney after four seasons University of Georgia volleyball coach Joel McCartney has been relieved of his coaching duties effectively immediately according to an announcement Monday by UGA Director of Athletics Greg McGarity. Currently in his fourth season as head coach, McCartney has compiled an overall record of 62-55 and Southeastern Conference mark of 29-45. “After a careful review of our volleyball program a change of direction is needed,” said McGarity. “I appreciate Coach McCartney’s years of service to the University and Athletic Association and wish him well.” McGarity said a national search would begin immediately “with a commitment to find the best coach possible to lead our program.” He also said assistant coach Chad Hanson would serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Georgia’s yearly records to date over the past four seasons: 2007: 17-13, 8-12 SEC; 2008: 17-14, 10-10 SEC; 2009: 17-14, 8-12 SEC; and 2010: 11-14, 3-11.

Wow! H has assembled a very nice recruiting class for 2011 and the start of one for 2012. I wonder how this will effect those efforts?

I wish all the best to Chad in these times. He's an awesome guy and knows a lot about volleyball.

What's the over/under for this thread? 9 pages?
On a serious note, this came as a surprise to many around the SEC. But I guess most mid-season firings do.

McGarity is an UGA alum, who was most recently the associate AD at Florida under Foley. He saw what happened at Florida with the right hire. I'm sure that UGA will pull out all the stops to find the best coach to make UGA a prominent fixture in the volleyball world. The resources are certainly there. Interesting timing, this late in the season. Next up for UGA, hosting Florida on Friday....hmmm

A lot of good talent / recruits DID NOT go to UGA because of that HC!

A lot of good talent / recruits DID NOT go to UGA because of that HC! That was fast. So, is this going to be "verbal abuse" or "pushy parents"?

It will be interesting to see of McGarity tries to get somebody established or looks for an up-and-comer with potential.

Not surprised by this. It was the best move for the future of UGA. The vibe the former head coach gave off was ........hmm less than sincere in his approach. It will be interesting to see if some of this REALLY nice talent headed that way will get snatched up.

UGA was one that offered my DD, so we went on an "unofficial" and it was an extremely odd experience. We were warned by others that went on "unofficials" in prior years but wanted to give benefit of doubt..... WOW If Chad has the experience and ability, UGA would be well served to give him a real shot.... great individual

I am not aware of those two issues you bring up but I am aware of issues far more serious Either write what you know or say nothing. Don't just hit and run.
