Del Core and their libero will pass 85% of the court, but if either gets injured then Italy's done.

If many American fans were furious about Karch bringing in 3 setters for Rio and the lack of a terminating Opp. Then Marco Bonnita, the Italian coach, is getting a lot of criticisms as well. He released Italy's roster today and is bringing in 4 Opps (Centoni, Ortolani, Egonu, Diouf)... with only 2 pure OHs (Del Core and Sylla) with Sylla's passing a little suspect right now. This is important as USA and Italy are in the same pool in Rio. Some of those Opp have been playing outside recently. I wouldn't get to hooked on oh vs Opp for team Italy.... Egonu actually is an OH who Bonitta had play Opp at the Quailes. I think she played both in the WGP. Ortolans was starting L1 for Italy in most of the WGP, with mixed results. I wouldn't be surprised to see 2-man receiving. Italy's real issue is at setter. Orro was/is banged up and she was a big part of their bounce back. Malinov wasn't getting it done so they actually called back Lo Bianco.

I'm rooting for Italy to make the knockout rounds just due to the fact that it would be a tragedy for Del Core to put in all the effort she's going to and not even break pool. Gennari would've made the roster but she's been hurt. If the core of Danesi, Chirichella, Egonu and Orro can get a good reserving OH by 2020 they'll be a force.

Reception is something Italy is generally not hurting for. I think the current hope is that either Gennari or Guerra (only 19) develop enough offensive game to stay on court by 2020.

Brazil and China also announced their rosters today.
Brazil: S: Dani Lins, Fabiola OPP: Sheilla OH: Fernanda Garay, Gabi, Jaqueline, Natália MB: Adenízia , Juciely, Thaisa, Fabiana L: Leia
The starting libero of the last couple years, Camila Brait, was beaten out by Leia who's come on strong. Only one OPP since Tandara was playing poorly and Natalia can play oover there. Adenizia was also tried on the double sub a few times. Despite not having played in a year, Fabiola beats out Roberta,
China: S: Wei QiuYue, Ding Xia OPP: Gong XiangYu, Yang FangXu OH: Changing ning, Zhu Ting, Hui RuoQi, Liu XiaoTong MB: Yuan, Yunli, Yan Ni L: Lin Li
Wei and Hui Ruoqi make the team despite not playing stellar this summer. Good experience. WC starter and London vet Zeng Chunlei is the odd woman out at the opposite position.

How many olympics is this for Lo Bo now? I believe this will be Lo Bianco's fifth olympics...2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012...pretty remarkable she's included, given she retired from the national team last year.

I think it's a mistake for them not to take Malinov. Also, imagine if Centoni and Ortolani were on the 2012 roster... That was a poorly put together roster by Barbolini. Everything centered on Costagrande.

Surprised with Brazil's line up, most especially with 4 MBs on the roster, given the dominance of Thaisa and Fabiana and the "rare" playing time for Juciely and Adenizia in top competitions. I would have wanted to see Roberto (the Coach) "bring" in only 3 middles (Fabiana, Thaisa and Juciely) and 2 Opposites instead. Happy for Leia, she was phenomenal in the last World Grand Prix finals vs the Americans. She was digging everything. Extremely sad to see Camila Brait, who has been considered as Fabi's heir apparent, being cut of this Olympic Games.

For some reason, Italy just gets upset in the Olympics by a much lower seeded team. Their best chance for an Olympic medal was back in 2008 when they came into the Olympics as the #2 team in the world and they won the World Cup the year before that. But, Berg had different plans then. lol
