Things rarely work out well when the team prima donna is the coach. All the ballyhooed team chemistry and a dime will buy each a cup of coffee. Ah, the memories of Rio: "Well, we collapsed at crunch time in the semis but the team chemistry was awesome."
The USA gym was not big enough to accommodate the world's #1 side out machine and Karch's larger than life-sized ego. He simply could not be bothered to figure out a way to make it work and was instead allowed to field an inferior roster.
Should Karch be fired? Arguably yes, as his celebrity is such a distraction. He certainly didn't provide any inspiration or atmosphere in that last and crucial time out huddle. Yes, winning the World's was nice, but at the end of the day the top seed laid an Olympic egg yet again.
There is a reason professional sports teams have the GM making personnel decisions, rather than the head coach.
And while I am at it: USA would have been far better off promoting Courtney Thompson to assistant coach and filling the last roster spot with Micha Hancock and her golden left arm...

Don't mudwrestle with pigs. They're better at it and they enjoy it.

Where is the incontrovertible proof that Karch has a big ego?

If you believe the gold medal was lost when Hooker was shown the door, then you must believe this team was completely incapable of winning an Olympic gold medal. We all know that is not true.
Would Hooker have been an asset? Yes.
Was the World Championship gold medal lost when Hooker left the team? No.

Would Hooker have been an asset? Yes. Was the World Championship gold medal lost when Hooker left the team? No. In all fairness, World Championship is absolutely NOTHING like the Olympics. Having watched all the semis, you could see all the teams really wanted it and fought their hearts out. And it was the Olympic pressure that cost USA women. Did we see those lump-in-throat, deer-in-headlights looks from the players at WC? No. By the way, OP, you're in danger now. Trust me, I know.

I have to agree Hooker should have been on this team. Her not being there has me scratching my head.

Just curious, was Hooker on any other Olympic teams? Must not have been as the US has yet to win a gold.

I didn't like this broken record the first fifty times it was played...

It is easy to obsess about Hooker. That begs the real issue which is the team needed anther big arm instead of Thompson. Could have been Hooker, Easy or Fawcett.

Just curious, was Hooker on any other Olympic teams? Must not have been as the US has yet to win a gold. Just curious, do you think putting the most talented team out there might help you win the Olympics? Just curious, did Hooker contribute to the 2012 silver medal as the Best Spiker? Just curious, does the 2016 team lack an imposing opposite hitter? Hmmmm Just curious, do you think an athlete coming back for a 2nd Olympic cycle might be able to handle the pressure better than a rookie? Just curious, in your day job, do you consistently make decisions based on logic like this? Curious indeed.....

What about her personal responsibility ? Is Destinee in any way responsible for her fate? If she wanted to win a Gold medal, what should she have done in differently in her life on and off the team?

What about her personal responsibility ? Is Destinee in any way responsible for her fate? If she wanted to win a Gold medal, what should she have done in differently in her life on and off the team? Hard to say in this situation. A lot of us don't have visibility on what the exact "problem" was that led to the rift. Some people have noted that after Hooker had her baby she may have mellowed. She did then have a huge season in Korea. My understanding is she never got an invite from Karch to see if she could fit in the team. But my knowledge is based on reading these forums so that's my two cents. You can read this thread back in March on whether Hooker was going to get an invite.. volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/63512/destinee-get-usnt-invite

Didn't she just have a baby in April?
When is the last time anyone saw her play?
