Watching Cook break her down in film segments a few years ago, I was sure she'd be the US Libero. Then she hit some rough patches and I wondered if she was going to stick with volleyball. So glad she persevered and has earned her spot. She's such a pleasure to watch and such a great person. 3 Huskers on the Olympic Team. The selection team got that right. Hat's off to Coach Cook and staff as well, this only reinforces the fact that Nebraska one of the best places in the nation to go to become an Olympic caliber Libero or 6 rotation OH. This has to help recruiting.

It's more of a maintenance thing at this point, given this is the second Olympics in a row with three former Huskers on the squad.

NE has to be better at player development than schools without winter and with ocean-front beaches. Coach Cook and company are masters at player development.

Coach Cook and his assistants are so good they took Pavan, a Canadian, and gave her the foundation that allowed her to develop into a world class beach player. Of course Pavan's height 6'-6" helped but they had to make up for the lack of beaches available in Nebraska and Canada most of the year . So that's 4 Huskers at this year's Olympics.

Six Selected for Nebraska Athletic Hall of FameSix distinguished student-athletes make up the 2021 University of Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame class, announced on Wednesday, June 9. The class includes Therese Alshammar (women's swimming & diving, 1998-99), Jordan Burroughs (wrestling, 2007-11), Bob Cerv (baseball and men's basketball, 1947-50), Kelsey Griffin (women's basketball, 2006-10), Larry Jacobson (football, 1969-71) and Cathy Noth (volleyball, 1981-84). The six members of the class came to Nebraska from five states and one foreign country. The 2021 Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame class is an outstanding group who each accomplished historic "firsts" in their respective sports. The class will be permanently enshrined with a granite plaque with the names of the six members added to the University of Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame Plaza. This year's Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, Oct. 1, a day before Nebraska takes on Northwestern in the annual Homecoming Game at Memorial Stadium. In addition to the 2021 class, the 2020 class will also be inducted in October after last year's induction ceremony was postponed due to the pandemic. The 2020 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame class included Amanda Burgoyne (bowling, 2004-07), Eric Crouch (football, 1997-2001), Sam Francis (football and track and field, 1935-37), Maurtice Ivy (women's basketball, 1985-88), Jordan Larson (volleyball, 2005-08) and legendary volleyball head coach Terry Pettit.

This has to help recruiting. Does this mean we should be expecting Sun, Kubik and Knuckles to be competing for Olympic spots in 2024? Frankly, I think it's a crapshoot. Nebraska is one of a number of programs that can train athletes to perform at a high level. Except for a handful of players, the only common denominator about who represents team USA at the Olympics is that they were identified at a very young age, long before any collegiate program, to be great volleyball players. Larson isn't on the Olympic squad because she went to Nebraska anymore than Poulter is on the Olympic squad because she went to Illinois. More importantly, do you really think Nebraska doesn't already get the players it wants? I'm trying to figure out which recruiting battle John Cook has went all in on an has lost recently.

That last two 4-year starters at Libero for Nebraska were or will be Olympians (Kayla Banwarth & Justine Wong Orantes).
To be a multi-year starter, an outside hitter for the Huskers will be trained to be a 6-rotation player. For example, Mikaela Foecke started her Freshman season as an Opp but was quickly switched to OH where she became a 6-rotation All American. She may well have become an eventual Olympian had she not lost the taste for International Volleyball and left competitive play.

I could see Sun, Kubik, Knuckles and Stivrins on the Olympic Team in 2024.
