I am done with this sport I understand why you are frustrated with the sport, but I think there's a middle ground. Be mad at the abusive individuals in power who have given gymnastics this reputation, but don't completely give up on the sport itself. Instead, you can support the athletes and coaches who are speaking out publicly, doing the WORK to change the sport from the inside out. Biles is a great example. Or Aly Raisman -- see her latest interview with the New Yorker. (link: www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-interview/aly-raisman-still-wants-answers)I am done with this sport until it corrects its broken ways.....much like I approached the .....I could give you a list of abusive institutions but you get the picture Individuals?..um NO...more like culture.

Do we put waaaayyyy too much pressure on young athletes to perform at an incredibly high level? Got watch the 12s division sometimes. Coaches screaming at refs, parents screaming at kids.... it is really shocking. And a shame, because if you took the "hierarchy" away, the kids would have a BLAST!

This is the coach Simone Biles needs.

I think we can treat the situation with Simone the same as an injury. It's unfortunate, but it doesn't take anything away from Lee.

It was also nice to see Rebeca Andrade win silver, the first women's gymnastics medal for Brazil.

I just learned there was a gymnast in Tokyo competing in her EIGTH Olympics! She retired in the 2000s, but returned to help pay for her son's leukemia treatments. She was offered to train in Germany for healthcare coverage so has represented both Uzbekistan and Germany. Amazing that she continued to qualify against the growing level of competition and youth. Respect.

Honestly I love this so much for Suni. Simone is the GOAT and has the accolades to prove it--5 World Championship All-Around titles plus the 2016 Olympics. Now Suni gets to share in that glory. I'm here for it.

No? Their job is to prepare the athlete for all this stuff, pressure, spotlight, popularity, competition, training, etc., and on the BIGGEST stage it all comes apart? I think Simone has a responsibility, too, to be ready when the moment comes. But I think it's not her alone. I applaud her for having the courage to do it, but...this is not a win in any shape or form. Simone doesn't owe ANYONE a "responsibility" to do anything. Today she took care of her mental health first, exactly what should happen. She did win today. If we really want to destigmatize mental health issues, we should treat them as physical injuries. Biles was stripped of an opportunity to compete because she sustained a serious injury that made competition unsafe and ineffective for her. We should be sad for her and her teammates and supportive of both. But talk of having won as if not competing is better is misplaced. She got hurt. She withdrew. It is what it is.

Honest question. This sounds like people here feel because gymnastics is dangerous that Biles pulling out was the right thing to do because her head wasn’t in the game. If it was a different sport would we feel the same?
Would we all feel the same if our women’s volleyball team said,” you know, with China Eliminated there is to much pressure for us to win so we are going to pull out if the olympics…”

Gymnastics is incredibly more dangerous compared to volleyball so "you're head not being in the game" in volleyball means you don't get kills or are making errors on defense and would be subbed out not risking you're life and your scores being counted in the competition.

If it was a different sport would we feel the same? Would we all feel the same if our women’s volleyball team said,” you know, with China Eliminated there is to much pressure for us to win so we are going to pull out if the olympics…” my opinion: since both are team sports, the equivalent scenario would be if Larson could suddenly not play in the knockout rounds due to a mental block, performance anxiety, etc. The team could still compete without her, which is what happened in the gymnastics team final and they won silver! I'd like to say we'd be understanding and empathetic towards her, but there's no way of knowing for sure in a vacuum. Maybe another comparable situation would be if Larson played but kept getting aced, blocked, not playing up to her usual standard - most people would call for a sub. If she didn't want to come out, would we commend her for trying to work through it or be frustrated that she may cause the team to lose? Would we expect the coach to ultimately make the call for the team if she wouldn't? That could really be where the comparisons of the two sports end - "When Kevin Durant's foot was off by an inch in Game 7 of the NBA's Eastern Conference semifinals, his shot was worth two points instead of three, and the Brooklyn Nets lost in overtime. When Riley McCusker's foot was off by an inch on her beam dismount at the 2017 American Cup, she slammed backward onto her neck and then rolled over it."
