But I thought Utah wasn´t top 4 PAC material?

One has to feel better about UW after this match...considering what at least one poster (me) was thinking after that Montana State fiasco. I was not going to be shocked if UTAH waltzed to an easy sweep last night. But seems fair to say these two teams are pretty evenly matched.

I wish I could stay up for these west coast matches! I at least remembered to record it and can watch later today. What a battle.

Terrific match. Dani Drews WOW! Washington looked like it was headed for the win and then Drews just seemed to take over when it counted. Lots of great players around the country this year, but Drews for me is the most fun to watch. Her fast attacking style reminds me of Annie Drews on the USWNT and I thought they might be related, but no.

Dani Drews has got to be the best leftie in college volleyball. Hands down!

The good from last night: Lauren Bays, Marin Grote. The bad: serve receive. It only took until early in the second set ‘til we had to hide Shannon on serve receive during one of her funks. She picked it up later but . . . The promising: more offensive and defensive options than last year’s team that made it to the final four and the same leadership and fight. I trust Keegan Cook, this coaching staff and this team to reach its potential.

Well, exciting match, for sure. Lots of credit to Utah, they looked like the strongest team in the last four sets, but Washington didn't give in and had their chances. 16-14, what can you really say? Ultimately, too much Drews. I felt like Drews not being her usual dominant self was the biggest reason for the loss to BYU. She’s just as important to Utah as Samedy is to Minnesota. I feel like she’s upped her game this year, too. I love watching her play. I think you need to give BYU more credit than that. Drews “not being her usual dominant self” was due in large part to the pressure put on her by BYU. BYU served tough enough to get them out of system quite a bit, which forced Drews into a lot of tough swings. BYU was getting tons of quality block touches on Drews attempts to the point where they were able to slow her down and pick up digs in the back court. My point is that good teams can make good players look bad. It’s not like Drews just suddenly flipped a switch against BYU and stopped hitting as hard.

5 sets of volleyball separated by just 1 point. Digs, assists & kills (and Drews) were the (very slim) difference for Utah.

Missing Drechsel as an offense threat is really a huge blow for UW's offense. It's much easier for the opponent block to stop our OHs. It's great to see Grote to be successful and very happy for her, but Sam has to step up for UW.

Drews did not look good against BYU and, frankly, her hitting percentage was dismal until early in the 4th set. Even Salima said she didn't "look herself" until the 4th. That being, some of Drews struggles relates to Utah's setting (that and not having that one extra hitter to take some of the pressure off as she did last year). Sure love the way Drews plays, one of my all time favorites.

Also, Koerber played out of her mind, especially early. Players can have exceptional games, and players can have off nights. I'm not trying to take any credit away from BYU, but regardless of the input, if Drews is having an off night, it's going to be tough for Utah to come out on top. Again, I go back to Samedy. If Samedy is having an off night, Minnesota is going to have a tough time. Regardless of the reasons, that's just how it is.

I trust Keegan Cook, this coaching staff and this team to reach its potential. Washington won the serve pass game but Utah were better defensively. The box score looks like UW won the blocking phase but Washington had their worst blocking match of the season touching just 50 of Utah's 172 attacks. Utah's block touched 77 of Washington's 176 swings. For UW just 44% of their block were positive, with 38% being negative. Utah had a 57% good touch rate and a 27% bad touch. That net defense helped the Utah backrow transition digs into swings and win the match in trans, despite UW having the better FBSO hitting efficiency. Without great floor defenders, Washington must slow down more balls at the net. For Utah, they won the match OOS. That is tough to do against Washington. Their issues are in SR. In the last two matches they get a FBSO at 24% off Robinson's passes and only 15% from Yett.

Dani Drews has got to be the best leftie in college volleyball. Hands down! First time watching her play last night. Has she ever played opposite? Wondering if she’s projected to make that switch at the pro club level or national team.

Utah's serve receive woes + pretty horrible OOS setting gave Drews some godawful places to try to swing from, and accounted for many of her hitting errors last night. They need to at least figure out how to put up a hittable ball when they are OOS.
