Washington won the serve pass game but Utah were better defensively. The box score looks like UW won the blocking phase but Washington had their worst blocking match of the season touching just 50 of Utah's 172 attacks. Utah's block touched 77 of Washington's 176 swings. For UW just 44% of their block were positive, with 38% being negative. Utah had a 57% good touch rate and a 27% bad touch. That net defense helped the Utah backrow transition digs into swings and win the match in trans, despite UW having the better FBSO hitting efficiency. Without great floor defenders, Washington must slow down more balls at the net. For Utah, they won the match OOS. That is tough to do against Washington. Their issues are in SR. In the last two matches they get a FBSO at 24% off Robinson's passes and only 15% from Yett. Thanks for the analysis. Utah's serve receive woes + pretty horrible OOS setting gave Drews some godawful places to try to swing from, and accounted for many of her hitting errors last night. They need to at least figure out how to put up a hittable ball when they are OOS. I'm not worried about Drews OOS, BYU was an off night. It is the other pins that will break down if they can't stay in system more.

The good from last night: Lauren Bays, Marin Grote. The bad: serve receive. It only took until early in the second set ‘til we had to hide Shannon on serve receive during one of her funks. She picked it up later but . . . The promising: more offensive and defensive options than last year’s team that made it to the final four and the same leadership and fight. I trust Keegan Cook, this coaching staff and this team to reach its potential. Washington won the serve pass game but Utah were better defensively. I trust Keegan Cook, this coaching staff and this team to reach its potential. One of the switches has been Calle to Bays at DS. I still think Cook will swap Bays and Crenshaw, but doesn't want to overload the frosh starting out. That could help shore up the passing and tip coverage. UW kept digging itself into holes last night at the start of sets that they had to climb out of. If you keep doing that, eventually you're going to run out of rabbits. Even so, they probably should have won Set 2 to go up 2-0. Utah should have taken Set 3, with UW coming back from being down 18-11. The biggest thing UW was missing last night was Sanders' block, which might have helped some to rope in Drews. They also said that Hoffman had been out due to an abdominal tweak, so may not have been swinging as freely as she had been (she had an uncharacteristic 8 hitting errors).

Crenshaw - 63 attempts - 2.23 Drechsel - 19 attempts - 1.95 Hoffman - 10 attempts - 2.05 Bays - 9 attempts - 2.28 Team grade was a 2.16 and a 52.5% GP. Both were better than their season average.

What if a shanking libero was UW's secret to success all along? /s

5 sets of volleyball separated by just 1 point. Digs, assists & kills (and Drews) were the (very slim) difference for Utah. These are not the final numbers. Utah outscored Washington 111 to 106.

IDK if this is trend around the arenas, but showing video during timeout of players not knowing things from the 90s needs to stop. calling VHS DVD?? it made me feel OLD when i'm still, in my point of view, young.

WOW what a great finish to a great match! I was surprised that the Washington crowd was not more of a factor, looked like they were sitting for a majority of the game too. this is definitely normal for the crowd. seattle is all passive aggressive people so it comes out LOL. there was the one guy from a volleyball group that was trying to get people to stand up, especially when it was 14-14 in the fifth.

I think the Seattle passive aggressive thing is an urban legend. IMO, the people that run the video in the arena are what took the steam out of crowds at HEC ED. There was a time when the Dawg Pack would really get things going during time-outs. And the band would join in. It was pretty intense. But somewhere along the way, about 7 or 8 years ago, some marketing type decided to try to make it like an NBA arena, with immediate videos and contests and loud funky music so that the cheering sections were drowned out. Honestly, I don't even know why the pep band shows up anymore. They take such a back-seat to the video board that most people don't know they're there. I'm not living in the 70's and I get the importance of promotions and sponsors, but they basically took away the organic crowd vibe, IMO.

Yeah, rather have a simple call/response go! huskies! than all the flashing screen and amplified music nonsense.

I know I sound like an old man, which I am becoming, but I don't like the intro video at the Wisconsin Field House. I think it sucks energy out of the crowd. When they can bring back the old school intros with the starters high fiving the line of kids and the band playing, that was better. I was always waiting for the video to end to get to that. The team will hopefully make more highlights once the match starts.
