Now that it's a federal holiday I want to wish everyone a Happy Juneteenth. If you have no idea why this day is significant, I am encouraging you to find out about it. If you already know about this day in US history, I want to encourage you to broaden your understanding and research related topics. I've been curious lately about the origins of Black Wall Street and I may check that out today after Father's Day festivities are done.

Who dis?, said 300 million Americans this morning. In honor of Juneteenth, which shoulda been Zora Neal Hurston Day, I offer two of my favorite all-time books for your reading enjoyment: Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. Trust me, your life will be better. Thanks AmeriCanVBfan.

I'm good with keeping it called Juneteenth, as that addresses what the day is about. My sincere hope is that every year, the day becomes more and more commonly accepted and celebrated by all Americans.

The Godfather (by Mario Puzo) changed my life. I read it in the 4th grade when the book wasn't supposed to be read by kids as young as I was. I remember how it shattered my perspective of everyday things, that there are behind-the-scenes machinations and shenanigans going on that we're not aware of. I got very depressed.
Also, I learned that Italians are trouble. This has shaped my behavior toward boys named Antonio, Luigi, Santino, Carlo, and Vincenzo while at the same time, I felt compassion for girls named Elena, Francesca, Isabella, Sofia, and Viviana. (Ignore the fact that Hispanics shared many of the same type of first names as Italians.)
My favorite book by a Black writer is Native Son (by Richard Wright). I also loved Edward P. Jones's short story collection Lost in the City, especially the story "The First Day." So good.
Other than that, I don't read a lot of books by Black writers. Don't know why. I read a disproportionate number of books by Indian, Australian, English, Irish, and Canadian writers -- mostly because I like to read Booker short-listed works.

It was the first assigned book in my freshman core class Literature of the Outsider. I read it 5 or 6 times that semester, and I didn't really have time for that. The other book I remember from that class was The Awakening by Kate Chopin.

I knew nothing about Juneteenth until a couple of years ago (and I have been around for a pretty long time now). I learned about Tulsa around the same time and found that infuriating, both the event. the cover-up at the time and the subsequent suppression of the history. Until very recently, adults who had gone to school right there had zero knowledge of the history. Two many of these events happened, some of them far too recently, and we try to bury them, and I don't think it is healthy.

Charlie Kirk isn’t a fan. Charlie Kirk is just one or two good conversations away from being educated on what Juneteenth is actually about.
