The wildcards for the Edmonton Challenger have been posted. Monkhouse/Harnett got the main draw WC. Marcelle/Belanger and Bansley/Bukovec each got a QWC. Mel/Brandie have dropped out, and Pavan/McBain are in the qualifier via points.
The McNamaras are #7 on the reserve list and will probably get in as teams drop out. But they actually have fewer entry points than Monkhouse/Harnett and Marcelle/Belanger, and the same as Bukovec (Bansley has none). So it looks like the wildcards were awarded strictly by entry points with the exception of Pavan/McBain. My speculation is that the Montreal Elite 16 main draw wildcard will be awarded to Pavan/McBain. However, an athlete can only be awarded two wild cards during the Olympic qualification period, and I believe the Pavan/Bukovec wild card from Pro Tour Finals in January counts as one. If so, that means Sophie/Heather won't be able to get any WC into Montreal and almost certainly won't get in on entry points either.
They could have awarded one more main draw wild card for the Edmonton Challenger event (they awarded two on the men's side). So I wonder why they didn't give the McNamaras one? Perhaps they will get a QWC for Montreal. And it also seems like Sophie/Heather would've been a good candidate for a second main draw wild card, but they were put in the qualifier instead. It will be interesting to see where the Montreal wild cards go, and those should be posted next week.

I think PTF was just before the start of the qualification period, so I would guess that wouldn’t count against her 2 possible WCs?

Wouldn't the fact that the WTF also doesn't award points seem to weigh against including it?

The qualification period started on January 1, 2023, per FIVB documents posted here previously. Could be that PFT doesn't count because it doesn't award points, as G2 suggested. I'm struggling to come up of any other explanation why Lea Monkhouse and Amanda Harnett would receive a wild card instead of Sarah Pavan.

My guess (emphasis on guess) would be that this allows them to maximize the number of Canadian teams participating? Rather than give a main draw wild card to a team who is already in the qualifier (and who they think has a good chance of qualifying)? Would Monkhouse/Harnett even have enough points to be in the qualifier? Edit: just looked. They wouldn’t even make the qualifier with their current points.

Perhaps, but they still had an unused main draw wild card.

Just noticed that Mel/Brandie and Sophie/Heather are signed up for the Vancouver Open in a couple of weeks. Seems likely those teams will play each other then, perhaps even the finals.
Shanice/Marie-Alex are also registered, but no Sarah Pavan. Guess Pavan/McBain are going to Portugal.

I have been checking in on who is registered for it, and had heard on the Sandcast they wanted to play Vancouver. Not sure what days I will go watch, but definitely at the very least Sunday.

Gonna be awesome. On the men’s side, I’m intrigued to see Steven Marshall and Sharone Vernon-Evans play, perhaps against Schachter and Dearing?

Tough match for Pavan/McBain. They don't look like an elite team at the moment and the month off to practice doesn't seem to have done them much good. McBain spent the majority of game 2 trying to roll the ball down the line, getting blocked maybe 5-6 times (most covered tbf), hitting a couple out and getting dug once or twice. Also hitting several of the shots much too far to the middle.
At this point in her career, Sarah is struggling just to stay at this level herself and its hard to see her elevating a player like McBain seems to be based on my limited observation. Seemed outclasses athletically by Italy.

Ive only seen a couple matches so I am still holding off on final judgment, mostly because Pavs has been one of my favorite players for a long time, but it looks like they probably are not in the mix for one of those berths

I think the real question is how will the Canadian Federation choose which team to send to the NORCECA Continental Cup next summer. By FIVB points? That seems pretty wide open at the moment. Pavan/McBain, Bukovec/Bansley, Harnett/Monkhouse, Marcelle/Belanger, even the McNamaras all have a decent shot. Maybe even a new team. Whichever team Canada sends would likely to be favored to win the Continental spot. Cuba’s team from Tokyo would probably be their strongest competitor if they’re still playing.
