I honestly DO think it is the TV production for B1G matches that make teams look better. The camera views, camera lenses, and lighting really do make a difference in showing. PAC matches are often much further away, darker, not high definition -- and B1G is closer and the TV viewer is part of the action -- so it feels like more intense play. It really isn't any more intense. ...and the RPI hurts the PAC teams just the same as the B1G. The RPI has WAY too much weight on opponent records, and needs to have a scale and more depth to its calculations. You can literally have a crappy record and LOST to really good teams and have a great RPI because the combined records to the teams you lost to are so good. OR you can have a really good record and have crappy opponents and have a good, inflated RPI. Both those things happen in the RPI and it's imbalanced. totally agree. I don’t like watching pac matches because of the productions and it definitely does make it feel less intense And Pac-12 teams mostly play in 20% full basketball arenas. That doesn't help the intensity level.

I really, really wish that Pablo were more of a factor in bracket-building. Also, welcome, horchato. Always good to have another B1G fan here, and Northwestern deserves some more representation.

yeah Ohio State has fallen off the rails, idk what happened there. NW has pushed and beaten teams and are clearly better than their rank but they lost a lot of games due to not having a healthy setter, so that explains that case too. As a Northwestern fan, before injuries to both of our setters that crushed us for 4 very winnable games (Michigan, Indiana, MSU 2x), we were RV and in the 20s for RPI. I actually thought we were fairly ranked then. What I'm more surprised is how other low-mid range Big Ten teams like Indiana, Illinois, etc. were buried by RPI and completely dismissed by early October, when to a new fan like me, they play like teams that belonged in a tournament. I don’t think it was the CU loss that hurt Illinois. It was the Illinois State loss. I wonder where their rpi would be had they won that match.

None of those teams should be touching the tourney this year. haven’t earned it, don’t have the resume this year. sucks but it is what it is Yeah I'm starting to comprehend exactly the evaluation metrics highlighted by the committee that ensure statistical fairness, which is typically a very sound approach. Just wish special circumstances would be taken into account more - Northwestern's RPI dropped by almost 40 slots due to setter injuries and as a homer fan that hurts to see

Thank you! Currently a student there, went to my first game off a recommendation from a friend. Simply put, stunned by how enjoyable the game-day experience is (Welsh-Ryan is incredible, both the announcer and the DJ rock too haha) and am absolutely hooked

I just looked at their pre-conference schedule and it’s not like they lost a ton. They just didn’t have the RPI buffer to lose matches in conference they shouldn’t have lost, sure due to injury. But other teams like Purdue and Kansas went into free fall losing mode and still maintained healthy RPIs. Head scratcher

As a whole, thanks everyone guiding me through the ins and outs of volleyball, always great to learn more and engage with the community. That being said, it'd be great if people were a bit more appreciative and less combative of differing opinions. Understand that all of y'all are diehards, adore the sport, and have an endless wealth of knowledge on teams and players. Nonetheless, newcomers bring in fresh perspectives and new ways to think about things. I'm more likely to be wrong than right, but treating the status quo as 100% correct may not be the optimal approach

Head scratcher Idk how exactly RPI is calculated, but with either of our setters being actually healthy, we are at the very least moderate favorites vs Michigan, Indiana, and MSU 2x. If Northwestern went 3-1 in those matches instead of 4-0, I'd imagine our RPI would be quite solid.

Sure, Indiana is playing well, but all they had to do was win those two matches and they'd be in.

Just wanted to point out that the RPI hurts the PAC more than the B1G. That’s why Pablo was invented. Pablo was invented by a Big Ten person at Purdue, in a time when Big Ten volleyball was not considered elite.

I don’t think it was the CU loss that hurt Illinois. It was the Illinois State loss. I wonder where their rpi would be had they won that match. RPI gives bonuses for wins over T50 RPI teams and penalties for losses to teams with RPIs 285 or worse (bottom 60). Outside of that, WHO you lose to doesn't really matter. Instead, RPI just looks at who you played and the percentage of matches you won. So the RPI of Illinois would be pretty much the same in the following scenarios: - Illinois beats Michigan (RPI 66) and loses to Illinois State (RPI 202) - Illinois loses to Michigan (RPI 66) and beats Illinois State (RPI 202) Because in both scenarios, they played the same teams and have the same match win %, and neither team falls into the bonus or penalty range.

However, ultimately, I was more or less just voicing an opinion, while some users on this site more or less dug into me. Let's all take a step back and enjoy vball
