As I have said, I thought 2022 would be a year of growing pains. Badgers made a lot more progress than I expected, but they didn't quite get there. Or maybe they did but there was a bit of backsliding right at the end. They need to be more stable match to match. Having Hart probably made them quicker to evolve than they would have been otherwise. Passing is one problem. Barnes, Clark, even to an extent Bates, had problems passing when they started at libero at UW. They all got a ton better over the following year, and a lot more dependable match to match. I hope GG will follow that pattern, else she is going to be in a fight for that libero spot. If Franklin wants to have an pro career, she needs to get more dependable as well. Ashburn and Hammill have a lot of room to improve as well - in their choices as well as their location. I felt Hammill's defense really started to pick up at the end of the year. We will have a lot of DSs from which to choose in the portal. I hope we take advantage and actually are able to use them.

It was uofastudent I was referring to, who called Orzol the second best passing outside in the tournament behind Nuneviller (not sure where the other guy drew a made up reference to himself/Buzzerio from, but that seems to be his MO). Knowing Orzol passed under a 2 against Penn State I was interested if she repeated that poor passing performance against Pitt. If so, the implication was she doesn’t add really any value to the floor as a subpar passing, non-terminating outside. Although her stretch of kills in the 5th AFTER they’d already sunk themselves in a hole was very entertaining. As you already observed, correctly, if Ozol is receiving so few serves as she did, her passing numbers on those few balls is largely immaterial. Is she the best out of a bad situation? She’s better than Franklin and GG.

That's what I have been trying to say. We aren't in practice. While the passers may have their flaws, they may be the best passers available on the roster.
Post season is not the time to experiment.

Orzol at Libero
A 5-1 capable setter (must have), or does Shef stick to loyalty and forces the subpar 6-2 once again — maybe another B1G title and Regionsl Final… want to beat Stanford in ‘23 — you’ll need a legit setter to run the slow.
Robinson belongs on the RS and Shrek in the middle!!!!
Franklin and someone on the OH Pos. (Maybe a high profile transfer?). —- I really don’t see Wrobel and Demps staying if Orzol is kept to play at WallBall/reset position.
CC MB
Ashburn DS
GG serving specialist

She’s better than Franklin and GG. She's better than Franklin and GG and people want to target Franklin to hurt her ability as a hitter as well. But compare to last year's finals when Orzol was the one most targeted with Barnes and Civita passing alongside her. And orzol did fantastic that game.

None of that makes what won the BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP a "bad situation"! Yes, when Hilley was playing six rotation 5-1 setter, there were more subs to play with, and the serve-receive was better. But Hilley is gone. EVERY decision of how to deploy your players and use your limited substitutions is a trade-off between offense and defense. But none of that makes the choices made which won the B1G championship a "bad situation".

The badgers came off a national championship season replacing half a starting lineup of really important players, and playing an entirely new system with two setters who had really not shown us anything yet. I would have bitten off my own arm to have a chance at a B1G championship given that situation regardless of what the B1G coaches thought preseason, especially given how the team looked in spring and the first few weekends. To win by three games was just not on my bingo card. I was a little disappointed that the promise of the end of the B1G season did not carry over. There was a little fragility there.
We'll still be in a 6-2 I think, barring a big grad transfer at setter. There won't be space at the hitting positions for all the talent otherwise. The passing and setting needs to improve and I think it will. I've always seen that as a two year project. Robinson I think goes to the middle. Smrek is just not as effective on the block there, and they can interchange them situationally during play anyway. Demps, Wrobel compete for the right side spot - or as situational sub - which is Demps role right now. Players get hurt, have down periods, and get sick - they will be essential to success. If either of them can actually learn to pass at a high level over the spring and summer, and if Demps can up her blocking game, they could challenge for a spot on the left as well. That has to be what the coaching staff will tell them.
I don't expect Damrow to immediately come in and light the world on fire at libero, but GG needs to do better. There will be some competition in the gym. Frankly, it's hard to see the team playing as well without Orzol if they run a 6-2. She passes, plays D, blocks. Her hitting is probably the thing that will improve most with better passing.

Wow. For those who may hit the Great Wall of Payment, Fuerbringer was named the LA Times Girls Volleyball Player of the Year. Sounds like some other setters who've been through the Field House, yeah?

Thanks, I saw the title in the link, and then a question mark, so I was wondering. She sounds great.

Not sure if this was ever mentioned in the other thread or during any senior night posts/speeches but Liz Gregorski is in the portal for her COVID year.
I hope to see her become a full time starter wherever she goes!

I hope to see her become a full time starter wherever she goes! She's seeking a beach program. She's had knee problems throughout her career and wants to finish out her time on the sand.
