Every sport does gimmicky or over the top things
I don’t see why having it in volleyball is an issue.

Iowa wrestling met Ok State at Kinnick in the grapple on the gridiron In a top 5 match in the world of NCAA wrestling. I was excited for the possibility of what team Neb would be playing - Texas, Oregon, Pitt, Florida, Louisville etc - very underwhelming to have Omaha. At least have guts and go against Creighton - just my two cents I have a hard time imagining any top team wanting to play another top team outdoors, given how important it would be to win and being outdoors provides so much uncertainty. Hey, I think it’s a cool idea either way, but I will note North Carolina and Michigan State agreed to play a men’s B-Ball game on the deck of a frickin’ aircraft carrier, and it doesn’t get any more blue blood than those two…

Every sport does gimmicky or over the top things I don’t see why having it in volleyball is an issue. I mean baseball is kind of the quintessential "Old Man Yells at Cloud" sport and even they built a stadium in the middle of a corn field to pay tribute to a 30 year-old movie. It was event of the year. Nebraska thinks, "You know... maybe we could play a match outside?" Nope. One step too far.

Every sport does gimmicky or over the top things I don’t see why having it in volleyball is an issue. It's not really an issue. More of a response to the post trying to make it sound like it was the equivalent of curing cancer. Most gimmicks (outdoor hockey game, Field of Dreams regular season game) celebrate some part of the game's history. Unless this is to celebrate backyard games at family reunions, the obvious reason is that Nebraska is butthurt over losing the attendance record and wants to set a new record far out of reach (until the next outdoor match).

The first contrarian reply on this thread was posted before a single user even said they wanted to go...

Some will buy tickets and attend. Some won't. To each his own. I see it as an opportunity for fans to show support for the program, including folks who do not normally attend matches. Don't understand the controversy. But the last I knew WI serves beer at their stadium. If so, discounted beer could possibly make any NE record short-lived.

Could bring back the baseball riots of the late 70s by having nickel beer night in addition to the match.

In my view, Wisky should absolutely go for it. The rising tide raises all boats. More attention and eyeballs on the sport would be great.

As both teams are playing in same conditions, where is the advantage or disadvantage for either team? Also, grown the game, celebrating fans, and volleyball in your state is pretty important. It is still a gimmick and publicity show. Don't you root for a football team that plays an annual game at the State Fair? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
