USC Coach Brad Keller talked a little about the challenges of travel to B1G matches on the Volleyball Master Coaches podcast at the 7:30 mark. It sounds like they are looking at a combination of charter and commercial flights but nothing is set in stone at this point. Wow. Keller says "I feel like a CEO or a manager now, not a coach." Which is exactly why some of us are so disappointed with conferencce realignment and, especially, the death of the PAC. Money has won. The notion of amateur sports played by college teams is gone.

Money has won. The notion of amateur sports played by college teams is gone. ABC/ESPN and FOX overpaid for college football rights and, thus, are trying to concentrate control. Musical chairs. The PAC was without a chair when the music stopped. The ACC had a 3-legged "stool". The Big 12 had one of those "cane" seats. Everyone else, other than the B1G and SEC, are standing room only. The result is that access is going to get squeezed to keep prices high. Right now, I'm paying $11/mo for Sling Orange's Sports Extra to get six regional PAC-12 Networks, SECN/+, ACCN/x, and LHN + $10.99 for ESPN+ (Big 12, etc.). I'll be paying considerably more next season, primarily just to follow Husky Volleyball and Softball. By squeezing access to keep prices high, they will limit the growth of the fan-bases to only those who can afford it. If you (the young, the old, and the poor) can't: Fahgettaboudit! The PAC has fallen. The ACC is next. The Big East and Big 12 have been shunted off onto a side-track (ESPN+). The best outcome might be one nation-wide football super-conference, with everything else ("non-revenue" sports) falling back into regionally based conferences. The PAC may rise again (just not for football)!

Once the word gets out next season about the brutal travel these people will suffer from it will kill their recruiting. WCC schools like San Diego and Big West schools will benefit from this for their VB recruiting. Karma will be swinging for both USC and UCLA.

I should make it clear I have no idea what the future of either UCLA or USC is going to be, but I don’t believe for one second there’s going to be a sudden surge of talent to San Diego and the Big West schools because of travel concerns. At best there will be an increase in talent because of overall participation numbers and athleticism increasing. But the best players are going to continue to seek out the opportunities which represent the highest profile and the most resources available regardless of travel obligations.

Fox just ran a sappy segment on the demise of the PAC and the legacy of its men's basketball programs (never mind that they haven't won the title since 1997, and all but two of their titles are at least half a century old). Absolutely hilarious, considering Fox's role in that.
