Nice first set win for SimRod. From what I could see. Which is not much in this fog!

as it stands great first round Can v USA and USA v PUR. This USA CAN match is very loud and high energy. Maybe I’m just noticing it, but they seemed to have turned the mics way up this year. I love being able to hear the chatter between players. Unfortunately you can also hear whistles from other courts, venue music, car alarms, etc. But it’s fine. Toni/Savvy played much better today than last week and very nearly won it in two. But Savvy struggled against Canada’s blocking and defense late in set three. At least I think that’s what I saw through the fog!

Ah, well, two USA teams done only 45 minutes into the tournament. The Quali system is brutal, 1 and done.
Yeah, Savvy didn't have a good 3rd set, and Toni didn't either on a couple of opportunities... she got aced once.
Slovenia did well last week, but the defender on Slovenia melted down at the end of set 3 and they're already out. She was set tightly but failed to side out. Then she trap set her blocker but she was able to sharp cuttie it to stay within reach. However, the reason I say melted down is that at 11-12 down, she served 2' long. Then at 13-14 down, she served 3' long to end the match ... on routine float serves. 9th one week, to 1 and done 5 days later.

I also love hearing just about every word, even the quiet talk. I use high quality headphones to help with that.

I just realized, the Women's side of the tournament, an hour in, has no USA teams left, as there were none in Main Draw either.
I'm going back to sleep.

Yeah, sad to see Savvy and Toni lose a 20-17 lead in the second set. And not take the third set.

They didn't - they were down 17-20 in the second, then held off seven set points before finally giving it up. There were a lot of streaks by both teams in this game, but the US never found one in their favour in the third set. I think Canada scored 9 of the last 11 to put it away.

Simo/Toni have now gone a very, very long time without getting into a MD. With the exception of their glorious run in LaPaz, they havent beaten a non-Q team in on the FIVB in the last 2 seasons. Coupled with never finishing above 5th in a pro series in the same time frame and I am very surprised they are still together.

Anyone know what the hold up was in CAN NZL 2nd set at 14-14?

It’s interesting because it looks like they’re playing NORCECAs with different partners (Harward and Van Winkle) but playing FIVBs together?

Bansley/Bukovec squeak out a 15-13 win vs. New Zealand after being down in the second set 15-18. NZ took the foot off the pedal on their end-game attacks and serves.

LIthuania lose in the Quali after finishing 3rd last week. Surprising, although Andressa/Thainara were definitely no easy draw.
