Coconut Beach Volleyball Complex is advertising an AVPNext Gold event ($20K prize money) For June 2-4th. (my FB volleyball group is a great source for this info Florida beach volleyball players). Gold events have to be 20K regular Next events have to be 10k. Anyone hear of others? Who is fronting these purses, the event organizers, AVP? These seem like huge prizes post overhead, are all these events charging admission or has the entry fee increased dramatically and they are banking on people wanting to get out and compete again?

Florida and Texas are opening wide but California is still buttoned-up tight or close to it.
Might we see a serious shift eastward by the AVP?

Was just looking on the AVP America website, to see if there are any AVPNext events posted yet. There is only one listed, and that was early January, before the new $10,000 minimum standard was established. I believe this time last year, even with covid happening, there were at least 10 tournaments listed, carrying the AVPNext title...granted it was a $5,000 minimum at the time. With the $10k minimum, I'm not sure how many tournaments can get sponsor money like that; there's gonna be a lot of "regular" AVP America tournaments, with regular points this summer. Won't say them by name, but looks like there is an organization that is labeling their tourneys as AVPNext on the AVP America website, even though the prize money is nowhere near that level. So players, if you are signing up for a tourney that is labeled as an AVPNext because you think it will get you extra points...you might want to double check that. Some organizers might be taking advantage of the title and not delivering the points or the cash. I don't know how closely AVP America monitors the schedule to confirm that tourneys are labeled the proper way. There is a separate tab for AVPNext tournaments, at the top of the page, under SCHEDULE.

I'm starting to get nervous the longer it goes with no actual dates being announced.

Talked with an insider this weekend. Here's what I gathered...
Last year's champions cup series actually made profit, but tour was losing money in previous years.
That is making Donald rethink the whole approach.
While we may still see classic tour stops like the MBO, the old model of tournaments being staged across the country is likely changing in significant ways.
I got nothing about what a new tour model might look like.

Same location and set up, back to back women's and then mens teams and televised or broadcasted.

I wonder about the ability to gain new lifelong fans without a tour around the country.

Very interesting. I can see where it is a lot less costly to put on unattended tournaments (personnel/set-up/rental/permit/security costs, etc.), but there is nothing like attending a beach volleyball event in person, and being able to chat with people and feel the camaraderie of enjoying something live with fellow fans. I sure hope only virtual, streamed tournaments don't become the norm!

Wonder how much $$ saved in site rental/permits of NYC/MBO/etc vs ...what looked like renting a parking lot and putting sand down??
I wonder how else champions cup made a profit vs normal beach set-up?? Either more sponsorship $$ came in or reduced expenses I would think.
