That was an entertaining match. Both teams showed that they have a lot of potential.
Florida has many new faces, new starters, yet show that they can compete at a very high level.
Florida has a GREAT freshman setter in Stucky. Very exciting for Gator fans to be able to look forward to 4 years of Stucky. In this match she showed that she has a great connection with Essix. I'm sure that will become an unstoppable weapon as the season progresses. Markova has HUGE potential too. Just needs more consistency.
On the Stanford side, Kipp has big upside. Her backrow attacking is much improved. Miner, whom I'm so happy to have, got a little predictable later in the match setting Kipp, which didn't work out so well. But I'm not worried about that at all. Miner already looks better this year than last, and will continue to learn and improve. She had a good flow early. It's good to go to your hot hitter; but if the other team is keying their block on one hitter, you have to make them pay. She'll get there.
Not sure about Vicini. Blocking looks good. I'm glad they're going to her offensively. A couple attempts late--start of 4th set I think--looked not too great. But some earlier swings looked better. We just need enough offense from her to keep the opposing middle honest.
Francis, on the other hand, is a huge boost at middle this year. Very exciting. Plus she exhibits more attitude and emotion than most others on the team, which we need.
I'm super stoked about Rubin. She has a lot to learn; but she looks to me like someone who could be a great 6-ro OH. Fingers crossed.
A couple comments on the match. Yes, 21 SE's are a lot. It doesn't bother me as much as it appears to bother others. Although, I admit, I hate all the SE's after time outs. What bothers me the most is lollypop serves that allows the other team to get into a good flow. I prefer tough serves, and will accept the SE's. The SE numbers always get smaller as the season progresses.
Use of challenges? Not sure. I don't have all the facts. It's also the trust between coach and players. I will say the timing on the second challenge wasn't quite ideal.
Wow, the refs are not calling ANY doubles or throws. The 2-handed slam dunk by Stucky was ridiculous. I really don't want that to be allowed in volleyball. As a block, ok. But her teammate passed the ball to her. That was an attack. Ugh. Not good.
I loved how
hammer gave up on Stanford early in the 5th set. Props to
jgrout for staying faithful when the chips were down.
